WXYZ, WJBK to share news gathering services

In a move that says volumes about the ever shrinking world of broadcast news, the parent companies of WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) and WJBK-TV (Channel 2) announced Wednesday that they are partnering up to share content.

In addition to Detroit, Fox Television Stations and the E.W. Scripps Company have made similar moves in Phoenix and Tampa.

Starting this month, the pairing will allow the two Metro Detroit stations to pool content-gathering resources at general news events, allowing the stations to save on duplicate efforts. In other words, if Kid Rock performs at the Palace of Auburn Hills, one news truck will go out instead of two.

Indicative of the economy as well, the partnership allows both stations to reduce costs and increase their focus and resources on specialized franchise reporting.

4. It's a big improvement for CBS 62.

They shut down their local Detroit newscasts -- and almost all of their locally produced programming -- in 1994, shortly after Murdoch's nationwide purchase of stations from CBS affiliates and turned them into Fox stations. To save more money in Detroit, CBS cut out their news broadcasts and turned their back on their obligation as broadcasters.

8. Happening everywhere...
TV and newspapers are sharing locally here in Greensboro (WGHP and Winston-Salem Journal)

In the UK, the BBC is proposing sharing its newsgathering expertise with its arch-rival ITV, as ITV complain about the cost of producing local news and cut back local news production.
