6. I Encountered That Rushbo...

In a previous life I played radio talk show host. I interviewed many politicians and celebrities...many who put on an act when the red light was on and would be a different person during the breaks. In 1988, right after his network show started, I had a chance to interview Rush...quite a revealing interview as he claimed at the time it wasn't a radio show host's role to push a political agenda. While I considered his crap obscene (and still do) and saw the right wing trend that led to today's hate radio (a reason I long ago jettisoned talk radio), during the break times, the guy was very friendly. We chatted about his DJ days in Pittsburgh and then working for the KC Royals. At the time he had just moved to NYC and he and his wife (I think it was #2...maybe #1) were overwhelmed with how much more expensive it was to live in NYC than in Sacramento. Methinks the Rushbo of 1988 would hardly recognize the one of 2009...some he'd be happy with (the fame and money) but also there still has to be an empty feeling in knowing you've alienated more than you've attracted.
