Firefox
so long story I had to put Xp on the Asus (would not play well with a couple programs using WINE)...

Anyhow one of the issues is that poss called IE. I wanted to avoid getting unnecessary software on it... you cannot read AOL mail using the portal...

given many of these lappies do come with XP you'd think they'd be able to handle it

So installed FF...much safer... can read, and spell checks on the fly.

:-)

I can now read my email...and no, I will not actually load AOL software... don't need to.

just a minor (major) plug for FF...

12. The macbook has every possible browser, except IE
under the sun, and of course Dreamweaver...

Some, like Opera, are damn obscure

But I test the damn thing on them every time...

For day to day use I use either FF or Safari... I like Safari... needs updating

13. My ex a Pc user Raves about Safari
I tried it for a while. It was too slow. Being the uncomputer savvy person i am I just went to firefox. The Mac is just wasted on me, I only use it for "the internets";-)

9. Think cross over and Mac
essentially that is WINE

I have a couple windows programs that run fine under crossover... but my netbook (loaded with linux) they would not

So I had to use the copy of XP I had at home

Purely a work flow problem...

2. Can you jetison I.E. if you like Firefox better?
Your experience seems to be shared by many others I have heard. I wouldn't mind trying it myself. It seems like it would take up lots of space to have 2 browsers, though. Can you trash I.E. if you like Firefox?

3. IE is like herpes. You can ignore it and suppress it, but it never really goes away.
And every now and again if flares up and irritates the living shit out of you.

4. Yeah, but it requires extra work.
You need to find the add-on for Firefox that allows Windows Update to run in FF instead of IE, for one. Also, there is a teeny-tiny number of websites which still only run on IE, but they're few and far between.

I keep IE on my hard drive and only use it for Windows Updates and such, because I don't want to take a chance on the Firefox thing I spoke of ever not working. Also, I like going to MSN games and Pogo every now and then.

6. Firefox has an IE tab that helps with shit that needs IE to load properly..
Firefox has all kinds of bells and whistles that you can add.

I like the earthquake monitor add-on that shakes your browser window when there is a quake, and gives the earthquake data down in the corner of the screen. :smoke:

8. You probably should hang on to IE
There are still a few web sites out there that still will only work with Internet Exploder, but not Firefox, Opera, or any of the other browsers. I'm not sure how big IE is, but Firefox only takes up 26 MB. I'm willing to bet IE is similar--not really that much space taken up.

11. No, in non geek speech...IE is integral to XP
it's worst than the crabs... and cannot really remove it without risking damage to the underlying Operating System

And that is by design.

Hell, installing FF on a VISTA machine early on was... taking a risk

Thanks Bill, really

10. Their e-mail software is great, too!
I love Thunderbird! Not nearly as many bells and whistles as Firefox, but it still beats MS Outlook by miles.

19. I'm using it right now and I'm not even wearing pants.
In all seriousness, I think I'm done with MS. Been playing with Linux for the past two years and this PC has *only* Ubuntu Linux.

While there are a couple of programs for which I haven't found a replacement, there's more than enough (all free) stuff to keep me productive, entertained and busy.

20. Trust me, as a novelist, there are a couple that cannot be replaced
they are the writing novels types of tools... and it is a wide open ahem market for Linux

And yes I could use open office, in fact my WP of choice in MAC, linux and Windows... but not the same as these programs
