Disney Cuts 1,900 Theme Park Jobs
RYAN NAKASHIMA | April 3, 2009 05:18 PM EST | AP

LOS ANGELES — The Walt Disney Co. said Friday it had cut 1,900 positions at its U.S. theme parks as part of an earlier announced reorganization, representing about 11 percent of salaried employees in the division.

Some 1,200 people were laid off and 700 open positions will be left unfilled in the second phase of a reorganization begun in 2005 that was accelerated by the recession.

The company did not say whether it would book a severance charge, or how much the cuts would save.

"These decisions were not made lightly, but are essential to maintaining our leadership in family tourism and reflect today's economic realities," said Disney spokeswoman Tasia Filippatos in a statement.

The latest reorganization, designed to further unify two units operating separately at parks in Orlando, Fla., and Anaheim, Calif., was announced in February, but new leadership put in place took time to determine what cutbacks were necessary. .........(more)

2. This Is Surely Our Fault...
Yep...it's our fault oil prices rose that made plane travel cost prohibitive for most families (not to mention the repressive TSA antics and poor airline customer service). Then it's our fault that instead of paying rent or mortgage, we shoulda gone to the Magic Kingdom and spent even if we didn't have it (Visa and their 20% interest rates and obscene late fees thanks you). And, of course, it's our fault that those who now are losing jobs in tourism and other consumer-driven industries cause we shoulda known that trickle down only works when you're the trickler, not trickled on. And, it's our fault cause the high rollers no longer can spend millions on junkets and fill the hotels and rides as they stash their tax payer billions into their mattresses.

Yes, it's regretable more people are losing their jobs and the hardship will be felt on many levels, but this is the end product of decades of self indulgance and an economy hellbent on massive consumption with little regard to what happens when those who do the spending can't any longer. Times are changing...and this is just another example. The smart companies will adjust...the big ones will crumble.
