Pittsburg cop killer was a McCain supporter
Mr. Perkovic and other former classmates said they were surprised by this morning's events. Mr. Perkovic said Mr. Poplawski was opposed to "Zionist propaganda" and was fearful that his right to own weapons would be taken away.

Another friend, Aaron Vire, 23, said he'd helped Mr. Poplawski and Mr. Perkovic with a radio show they'd broadcast on the Internet, discussing "girls and life."

Mr. Poplawski had supported Republican candidate John McCain in the presidential election and had "very spirited debates" about Democratic candidate Barack Obama, Mr. Vire said.

Mr. Poplawski was opposed to Mr. Obama's election, which he thought would result in the loss of his rights, Mr. Vire said.

"He wasn't a racist but thought some of his amendments were overlooked," Mr. Vire said.

Mr. Poplawski told him he bought his guns "because he felt the quality of life was being diminished," Mr. Vire said.

"He said he'll be ready if there's ever an invasion of the United States and that he had stockpiled foods and guns for that eventuality."

I'd go so far as to say it's probably some combination of sociopath and narcissist.

Maybe even Borderline Personality Disorder.

38. More a mocking of Prison as centers of rape (and carnage)
Edited on Sat Apr-04-09 03:01 PM by NutmegYankee
Anything is OK as long as the private corporation gets their pay. I don't support the degrading treatment in prisons, but made the joke to point it out, since we know it is a reality. One that breeds even worse criminals, many now infected with HIV to boot. People here are too quick to jump on others instead of commenting that yes, that is our fucked up system.

Sorry the dark humor didn't seem to fly. Sarcasm is truly dead it seems.

On edit: Obviously, the shooter will be locked in prison for life, face the death penalty, or be found insane and locked away in a mental facility for the rest of his life.

the ratcheting up of right wing paranoia by right wing media may have also played a part. The guy was paranoid that "Obama would take his guns away". There is a whole right wing cottage industry set up to cater to these nuts.

21. One of the local TV stations said he was "dishonorably discharged due to
mental illness" - I doubt that the Marines would call actual mental illness dishonorable; he more likely had an attitude or other behaviour that merited dishonorable discharge if that is what happened.

58. Poplawski had once tried to join the Marines, but was kicked out of boot camp after......
throwing a food tray at a drill sergeant, Perkovic said.

Another longtime friend, Aaron Vire, said Poplawski feared that President Barack Obama was going to take away his rights, though he said he "wasn't violently against Obama."

Vire, 23, said Poplawski once had an Internet talk show but that it wasn't successful. He said Poplawski owned an AK-47 rifle and several powerful handguns, including a .357 Magnum.

Obama has said he respects Americans' constitutional right to bear arms, but that he favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he would approve some curbs on assault and concealed weapons.

Poplawski had been laid off from his job at a glass factory earlier this year, said another friend, Joe DiMarco. DiMarco said he didn't know the name of the company, but knew his friend had been upset about it.

What if we find out tomorrow that the Binghamton shooter had a "HOPE" sticker on his car? Hmmm?

The folks who do have blood on their hands after this latest massacre, IMO, are the likes of Limbaugh and Beck who have been whipping their deranged listeners into a frenzy of paranoia.

I point my finger at them.

66. Remembering recent events is always a good trail to go down ...
... take this trail for instance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rwandan_genocide#Media_Propaganda">talk radio propaganda before the Rwandan Genocide.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_T%C3%A9l%C3%A9vision_Libre_des_Mille_Collines">Here is Wikip*dia's link to the radio station, which started less than a year prior to the beginning of the killing and somehow disappeared with the refugees who escaped over the borders.

Three of RTLM's "leaders" were charged with crimes from incitement to genocide, genocide, and crimes against humanity. They were found guilty, but appealed the convictions.

Meanwhile, Rwanda is slowly recovering.

For more information, please make time to check out all the links in Wikip*dia's "References" section from that same page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_T%C3%A9l%C3%A9vision_Libre_des_Mille_Collines#References ).

57. Who Is Richard Poplawski?.......

Friends, Family Talk About Pittsburgh Suspect In Police Officers' Triple-Killing

PITTSBURGH -- The man accused of fatally shooting three Pittsburgh police officers and injuring a fourth was alternately described by friends as "an easygoing, fun-loving guy" and a known gun enthusiast who was prepared to die after he woke up on a bright spring Saturday morning.

Between volleys of gunfire at his Stanton Heights home, 22-year-old Richard "Pop" Poplawski was apparently calling friends and family.

"He just told my nephew, Billy, that he was shot twice -- one in the arm, once in the leg," aunt Marianne Klimczyk told WTAE Channel 4's Bob Mayo. "He just told him to tell everybody that 'I love them' because he didn't think that he was going to get out of there alive."

Childhood friend Edward Perkovic said he spoke to Poplawski via telephone at about 8:30 a.m.

"What he said to me today was, 'Eddie, I'm going to die today. Tell your family I love them and I love you.' And I heard gunshots and he hung up the phone," Perkovic said. "This was a complete surprise to me and my family and everyone's families that were friends with him. Nobody ever expected something like this from him."

Perkovic said Poplawski feared "the Obama gun ban that's on the way" and "didn't like our rights being infringed upon."

"He wasn't involved in any gangs, any militias. He believed in his right to bear arms. He believed that hard economic times were going to put forward gun bans," Perkovic said.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper said Poplawski was armed with a high-powered assault rifle and a pistol, and he had a significant amount of ammunition as he allegedly fired out of his bedroom window on Fairfield Street.

"He has a few weapons. I know he has a machine gun, I know he has a couple rifles and I know he has a couple handguns…They're recreational, and for deer hunting and for everything. I mean, he's not a bad kid," Klimczyk said.

A posting on what was believed to be Poplawski's MySpace Web page said, "I spread my secrets out. Everybody knows something, but nobody knows everything. Some could call me crazy. My answer would be that at least I insist to exist."

The page, which was removed by MySpace in the afternoon, included a photo of Poplawski and a description in which he called himself reasonably intelligent and well-spoken, with a wild life ahead, saying that the world is his oyster.

Friends told WTAE Channel 4 Action News that Poplawski had also been in Marine boot camp.

"He wasn't fully a Marine. He got a dishonorable discharge out of boot camp. He wanted to get out of the Marine Corps," Perkovic said.

WTAE found court documents indicating a protection from abuse order and disorderly conduct, but no major criminal violations in Poplawski's history.

"He was just an easygoing, fun-loving guy, telling jokes," Jeff Loffler said. "Everybody knew him. He was just the kind of guy who you could have a conversation with even if you didn't know him."

Poplawski is charged with three counts of criminal homicide -- relating to the shootings of officers Eric Kelly, Paul Sciullo III and Stephen Mayhle -- and a count of aggravated assault against Officer Timothy McManaway, who suffered a hand wound.

"I apologize to the families and the police officers that are there to serve and protect us, that they lost their lives, but I don't want the stories about my nephew to be told the wrong way," Klimczyk said.
