ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The Mount Redoubt volcano in Alaska has had another large eruption after being relatively quiet for nearly a week.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage says the volcano about 100 mile southwest of the city erupted early Saturday.

The National Weather Service said radar indicated a plume of volcanic ash rose 50,000 feet into the sky, making this one of the largest eruptions since the volcano became active on March 22.

The ash cloud was drifting toward the southeast and there were reports of the fine, gritty ash falling in towns on the Kenai Peninsula.

That's because they lowered the threat level from red to orange yesterday. Every time they do that, the volcano explodes. When it first erupted they had just lowered the threat level from orange to yellow. The volcano has a mind of its own.

The unfortunate thing about this most recent eruption is that it delays the drawing down of Chevron's oil tanks at the base, which was supposed to take place today.

8. Not so much from this last one.
It's a beautiful clear day here today, but with a fair amount of haze off to the west. From what I've read they're getting some ashfall down around Homer and Kodiak. We did have a little dusting here a few days ago, but only enough to make the snow look dirty.

7. You'd think they'd learn to get in there as soon as it quiets
and get the hell out of there, on launches if necessary, as soon as it starts to rumble again.

Whose brilliant idea was it to put storage tanks at the base of an active volcano, anyway?

12. Agreed...
I've been looking occasionally at AVO, and I think this is the first time I've seen a clear over water image. :hi:

15. I saw a bit of smoke a few days ago.
I like this new webcam. It only refreshes only every two hours, but that's OK.
