Puppies rescued from puppy mill. Cute pictures:
Over a hundred dogs and puppies were rescued from a puppy mill in Winston, Mo., this week after an officer was attacked by a chimpanzee and later found the uncared for dogs and several other primates. On Friday the Humane Society of Missouri documented and cared for the injured and malnourished animals.

One by one, 102 dirty, shivering, matted dogs emerged from pickup loads of pet carriers Friday morning at the Kansas City Animal Shelter.

The batch included Yorkies, poodles, Pekinese and Maltese — and at least two litters of tiny, squirming puppies with eyes barely open. Each got a doggie “mug shot” taken and a look-over from Humane Society of Missouri veterinarian Julie Brinker before being loaded into a trailer bound for St. Louis.

But authorities believe those dogs account for only half of those found earlier this week at an illegal breeding operation in Winston, Mo. They are searching for about 100 dogs that remain missing, some possibly in need of medical care, and are offering a reward for people who can help locate them.

Daviess County sheriff’s deputies spotted the small-breed dogs in “deplorable conditions” Monday night when they were called to the residence to help catch an out-of-control chimpanzee, said Tim Rickey, director of rescues and investigations for the Humane Society of Missouri in St. Louis.

3. I wonder where the mothers are?
They breed them as soon as they can. Poor things. I wish they could shut these breeders down, once and for all.

6. When the hell are the Obamas getting their damn dog!
This is the perfect time to do so!

Keep this disgraceful practice in the news!

Force people to be mindful of this continuing tragedy and remind them that there is an alternative.

23. Probably getting older and the chimps have less control over their actions.
Just like many humans do.

12. Take the dogs, jail the crims and seize the property.
Auction it off to help pay to home/rehab/adopt all those dogs.

Fuck animal abusers.

Nice work HS of Missouri.

14. Animal abusers should be necklaced.
Yeah, like in Africa, with tires and gasoline.

Or we could have them hung, drawn and quartered, or broken on the wheel.

15. I have a puppy mill rescue! An overgrown, poorly bred, slightly neurotic papillon named Lucy.
Edited on Sat Apr-04-09 08:34 PM by EmilyAnne
She was already a year old when she was liberated, so she had already learned some things that, no matter how hard we try, she will never unlearn.
The conditions she lived in for that first year were deplorable.
Living in and sometimes eating her own feces, never let out of her tiny coop to exercise or use the bathroom, being screamed at by men who would beat the side of her rickety cage with a water hose.
It was so hard to get her house trained. It took almost a year.
She trembles at the sight of strange men.
She is terrified of garden hoses. She literally disappeared under a porch for hours the first time I used one around her. All I have to do is walk near a water hose that is laying in a yard while carrying her, and she immediately buries her head in my neck, pulls her tail in and starts shaking.

The poor dog is on Prozac and Prilosec (to control the excess acid produced by her nervous stomach).

Still, she is so much fun, a sweet and smart little companion.
It was certainly worth it.
I hope these beautiful puppies find loving homes and that they are still young enough to be easily trained.

Great work, MO!

Here's Lucy, my puppy mill escapee on the way to a park!

20. That is so sad - the pups in the first picture can't be
more than a week old or so, maybe even less. And one below, they look to be only around a week or 1 and 1/2 weeks. I'll never understand how people can treat helpless, defenseless animals like that. I really, really wish something could be done about these mills, and instead of jail, the owners should have to live like their animals did.

21. with shelters bursting at the seams
I can't understand why it is legal at all to run a companion animal breeding business (even the good ones). If you want a dog or cat there are thousands (including puppies/kittens and pure breeds) languishing while waiting for the green needle.

Every time I walk past a pet shop I have to fight the urge to buy every animal in there - what exactly do they do with "leftover stock" anyway, or do they have the only retail business on earth in which all stock is purchased?

27. right..?
I'm sorry to sound all Commie about it, but 99% of cat & dog breeders need to be shut down, by LAW :* It would be one big clean-up for our country, a start anyway.
