Second call for knitters, crocheters & Code Pink supporters!
My first post for endeavor of Code Pink's did quite well! I'm posting again to find more help...please read the instructions on the link below. Although the site says 'knitters' we have been informed that crocheters are most welcome too!
*******************
Here's my original post~

I got an e-mail a couple days ago from Code Pink seeking knitters to knit 4" squares of pink or green yarn that will be arranged to spell out an anti-war message. Will be displayed in a 24 hour vigil at the White House Mothers' Day week. Here are the particulars:http://codepinkalert.org/article.php?id=4795

I know there are some here at DU who are upset with Code Pink at hearings. Here is an opportunity for your voice to be part of a bigger message through Code Pink. I admire this group's tenacity and their unrelenting use of one of our greatest freedoms, that of free speech. Take a peek at the link to see what the deal is...it's easy! Time to get those needles & hooks busy!

From the link above:

Calling all CODEPINK knitters! We are creating a beautiful, quilted cozy to cover the fence in front of the White House to honor Mother's Day. The message will be “We will not raise our children to kill another mother’s child”-inspired by Julia Ward Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation. We’ll be piecing it together from individual squares knitted by YOU as part of the 24 hour Mother’s Day vigil for Women who live in War Zones. The best part is you don’t have to be an experienced knitter to help! This is perfect for knitters of all skill levels—and a great opportunity for those who want to learn! Celebrate the time honored tradition of the radical act of knitting. How-to-knit page here (just in case!)

********************************************
Be sure that the squares are tightly made whether crocheted or knitted! If you have any questions please PM me or e-mail Janna at: codepinkcozy@gmail.com

1. Oooh, neat, I've got it saved.
One thing a knitter always has is a STASH. I look like hell in green, so my squares will have to be pink.

2. Great! I like knitting in pink better than the dark green...the green seems so
Edited on Sat Apr-04-09 08:19 PM by snappyturtle
winterish! But, I'll do a few. Code Pink needs five pink to every green square so it shouldn't be too much of a sacrifice for me! Thanks for your interest.

4. Thanks for posting this.
I'm excited to be able to join in on something for a change. I can only knit the basic stitch, and very slowly, but I've made five squares in a medium pink color since I saw your original message. I'm going to try for five more in a brighter pink and a couple of green squares as well. I hope more people will participate!

6. I'm so happy to participate too for the same reason as you!
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 11:41 AM by snappyturtle
I'm just knitting every row....it's tight and the edges don't curl. I'm knitting up a 7 oz. skein in pink and will do some green ones as well. I've had a little interference...my neice had a baby six weeks early...got to finish up my project for her too! Here's hoping more join. I think we have about seven people participating from here at DU so far.

edit: Went back to the original post...looks more like 15 total with this OP who expressed they'd participate!

of women who would gather for a few days each year at a local dude ranch to hook rugs. They called themselves the Happy Hookers!

10. Re: "as tightly knit as you can make them" -- I guess that means using much smaller needles than one
would normally use, such as thick yarn on medium-size needles, or knit with a double strand, etc??

12. I'm just using size 7 needles and worsted weight yarn in a
garter stitch. I cast on 17 stitches and knit 32 rows....includes the cast off. The squares hold their shape. I started out with a stockinette stitch and the edges curled and the squares seemed flimsy for the purpose. I'm knitting about 8 more rows in garter stitch to reach the 4" so that's going to have to be as tight as I am going to do. Since no particular gauge or stitch or yarn weight was specified, I don't know what else to do. It would take 'til Christmas to do as many as they need if we switched to really small needles.

14. Stockinette will always curl at the edges
Always, to many a knitter's dismay. :hi:

17. Done many a sweater in stockinette and was always happy to get to
the blocking! It's been quite some time since I've knitted and the evil curling edges of stockinette reared its ugly head! My hands have aged! Just not as quick as I used to be but my squares are coming along. :hi:

15. But I'd guess a double strand of yarn on #7s would make it tighter? Is that what they're looking
for?
I like using bulky weight yarn - may try that.

16. Will a double strand make it tighter or just more dense. I wish we
knew the standards better. Bulky yarn should work.

21. A double strand will produce a denser fabric
Tightness is more an issue of tension and needle size, imho.

22. That's what I think too. I hope CP is backing the entire piece.
I've been thinking about how I would put it all together and I think a backing would be huge in hanging the 'quilt' and would take away the worry of loosely constructed squares. I'm just glad I don't have to do it!

18. You should give it a try! Its relaxing after you learn a few basics.
I taught myself with books back in the 60's! I AM old. There is a link on the Code Pink site to learning how to knit...hint,hint. :hi:

My sister and her boyfriend have gotten into it - he quit smoking and it helps with his cravings!

This is the push I need to get myself going!

20. How wonderful that you have help available! You can always try it
and then at least you'll know whether you like it or not....if you don't give it a shot you'll never know! I haven't knitted in years and it has come back as if I never stopped. Glad I learned.
