Indy mayor says he was victim of pickpockets at Final Four

Detroit- --Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard claims his walk Saturday night to his downtown hotel from Ford Field's Final Four semi-final games was interrupted by street thieves who stole his cell phone.

The mayor of the city that will host next year's Final Four filed a report with Detroit Police late Saturday claiming he went to the aid of a man in apparent medical need, only to have another man reach into his pocket to take his phone. Both men then fled, Ballard told police.

On Monday, Ballard's office in Indianapolis issued a press release about the incident.

"It's been described as a mugging," said Detroit Police Second Deputy Chief James Tate. "By no means was it a mugging. He was not injured."

A gang of thieves stages a skit to lure hizzoner, and they steal his ... cell phone? What self-respecting hoodlums would bother with this kabuki for a lousy phone. They didn't get his money, credit cards? This is way fishy.

What did that hooker look like, yer honor? Or was he in the men's room at the game, with a wide stance and a foot-tap?

My bet is he lost the phone in some foolish way and invented a story.
