Governor Paterson Proposes Legislation To Fight Obesity
NEW YORK—New York Governor David Paterson announced on Friday two proposed legislative bills aimed to combat the obesity epidemic across the state. His bill to enact the Healthy Schools Act will establish nutritional guidelines and promote physical exercise in schools.
The Trans Fat Bill will ban storage, use, service or sale of foods containing artificial trans fats across restaurants, mobile food vendors, schools and healthcare facilities that are inspected by the State, City or County Health Departments, as well as in supermarkets and other food stores that are inspected by the Department of Agriculture and Markets. However, the legislation does not apply to food items in the original manufacturer’s packaging with a Nutrition Facts panel that provides information about the amount of trans fat contained in a product.
The initiatives are part of the Governor’s comprehensive strategy to promote healthy living that was introduced at his 2009 State of the State address in January.
“When one out of every four New Yorkers under 18 years of age is obese we must recognize that there is a tremendous problem and take steps to engage all New Yorkers in adopting healthier lifestyles,” said Governor Paterson. “The legislation I am announcing today will have a significant impact on the quality and healthfulness of foods made available to children and adults in schools, restaurants and supermarkets, and will help change the way people make nutritional choices.”
