River are producing roe (eggs)

does that mean that the american's man's Adam's Apple will go the way of the dinosaur? deep american male voices becoming rare?

what's to be done with the man made hormone that is found in just about everything?

1. It's the estrogen-mimickers in pesticides.
We need to ban some of these pesticides.

4. It's also estrogenic material found in plasticizers
Fabrics, plastic bags, even plastic wrap have been pointed to as sources. I don't know how all of those have held up under scrutiny.

11. When a toxic environment interferes with the instructions of the genes,
...the result is lower average sperm count and other effects.

================================
Pesticides lower sperm levels, study finds

By Rita Rubin, USA TODAY

Scientists for the first time have shown a link between levels of widely used agricultural pesticides in men's bodies and the number and quality of their sperm.

In a study out Wednesday, researchers found that men with higher levels of three pesticides widely used in the Midwest were more likely to have below-average semen quality and sperm counts than men with lower levels of the chemicals.

The scientists studied 50 men in rural Missouri and 36 men in Minneapolis. Their wives were patients at prenatal care clinics, so they were fertile. Based on semen samples, the men were divided into two groups: those with low sperm counts and quality and those with better semen quality.

...A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lab measured levels of the byproducts of 15 different pesticides in urine samples from the men. Men with higher levels of alachlor, atrazine and diazinon were significantly more likely to have poorer sperm quality, the researchers report in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. All three pesticides were more likely to be found in high levels in the Missouri men than in the Minneapolis men.

14. Sure. But to suggest "going the way of the dinosaur" implies
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 12:45 PM by Occam Bandage
a lasting evolutionary effect. If we were to have a hundred full generations of men with feminine features due to ambient estrogen, and then we were to remove all that environmental estrogen immediately, humanity would in the next generation snap back to its natural form.

Also hurrah for virile Minneapolitans.

34. That ain't necessarily so.
To "go the way of the dinosaur" does not imply a lasting evolutionary effect.

Dinosaurs were not die as a result of lasting evolutionary effect. I believe the most widely accepted hypothesis is that the environment changed too rapidly for the majority of dinosaurs to adapt or evolve to accommodate the changes.

I think that was what was being said by "go the way of the dinosaurs".

Also, there is no way to be certain that the next generation would "snap back to its natural form". The effect of environment on genetic mutation is a demonstrable and sometimes unpredictable variable.

42. Sure they did.
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 08:04 PM by Occam Bandage
There was a drastic environmental change, and as a result dinosaurs either went extinct (that is to say, met an evolutionary dead end) or heavily evolved. There was a lasting change brought about by severe environmental pressure. Meanwhile, there's no indication that higher environmental levels of estrogen would impose any sort of evolutionary pressure against higher testosterone/lower estrogen production. Perhaps there would be some amount of recompensatory pressure (in the opposite direction OP suggests, assuming we could somehow achieve the bottleneck necessary for any degree of evolution within such a short span as one hundred generations), but to suggest that external changes to the soma would be genetically encoded? That's Lamarckism.

16. 'Male fish growing eggs found in Potomac'
===============

SHARPSBURG, Md. - Male fish that are growing eggs have been found in the Potomac River near Sharpsburg, a sign that a little-understood type of pollution is spreading downstream from West Virginia, a federal scientist says.

The so-called intersex abnormality may be caused by pollutants from sewage plants, feedlots and factories that can interfere with animals' hormone systems, The Washington Post reported.

Nine male smallmouth bass taken from the Potomac near Sharpsburg, about 60 miles upstream from Washington, were found to have developed eggs inside their sex organs, said Vicki S. Blazer, a scientist overseeing the research for the U.S. Geological Survey.

19. I seem to have been mistaken in my belief.
Having read the National Geographic story where Ms. Blazer was quoted, the article does say that male fish have been discovered producing eggs.

I'd find the HOW of it fascinating to find out. Testicles producing eggs. How similar is the egg produced by the male fish to that of the female fish?

and revolted by men's breasts.

Since I must punish what arouses me (Jezebel!), women must remain covered so I can avoid the embarrassment and frustration of an unapproved erection.
