The Swamp

by Rebecca Cole

Ah, the Capital. Our nation's seat of government, where knowledgeable and dedicated public servants put aside partisan politics to hammer out laws and chart the best course for the country.

Right. These days, the House floor is more like high school, only worse, with freshman hazing tactics tailor-made for YouTube snippets and Fox sound-bites.

As reported by Politico, the GOP is now resorting to picking on vulnerable Democratic newbies, who with their quavering speech-reading and lack of knowledge about parliamentary procedure are ripe for the pickin'.

The classic method of how it's done can be found in the video (at link), showing Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) opening up a can of you-know-what onto unsuspecting Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Ohio).

With House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) leading the charge, a select cadre of House GOP lawmakers wait until freshman House Dems are speaking on the floor and then pounce, peppering the befuddled rookies with tough political questions on sensitive topics and then cutting them off mid-sentence.

8. "Excuse me, Madame Speaker, but I will henceforth ignore the questions of the idiot from NC."
"And note that I didn't yield the floor back to said idiot."

4. The R's are going to get Rahmed.
I don't know what the Dems are planning, but you can bet something is coming. Revenge is a dish best served cold. Let them play their silly games because they are going to make those new Dems grow up fast and tough. It isn't pretty now, but you know payback. Those fools are just teaching the newbies tactics they may not have learned for months.
If I were Rahm, I would let someone drift an idea their way. I would keep something lightly in the air. They won't know when or where.

the GOP's approval is their lowest in 25 years.

7. They are too clever by half.
Since they are probably members in office a while, they think they can't be touched. However, there are more ways to skin a cat. The Dems shouldn't complain. They should pair the newbies with older members and give them a crash course in House rules. Unless they have just come out of a cave, they know how nasty politics is. I would be so pissed that I would learn the rules sideways. 2 can play.

I'll just say this. We have Rahm. The R's need a bigger boat.

6. THANK YOU RETHUGS!
Please keep up your nasty dirty tactics! Please keep up the flagrant bully action! If there's one thing Americans can't stand, it's a bully who preys on the weak. You're exposing yourself for the nasty bullies that we've always known you were, now all of America can see just how pathetic you are! You think that you have it bad now, just wait until 2010, you'll be lucky if there are even enough rethugs left to fill a conference room!
