Don't watch it - it is disturbing, even though it is low resolution.

This poor woman was definitely sick and should never have been allowed access to a gun. She should have been under care in a facility that would have kept her from harming her son and herself.

IMO The kicker of the story:
"The murder weapon was a gun rented from the shooting range. There are restrictions about gun ownership in some cases of mental incompetence, but that would not stop a person from renting a gun at a shooting range, McNeil said."

I would recommend not watching the video.

The rental is not really that strange as ranges are typically well controlled. The range at which I have shot NEVER allows more than one person in the stall. You are not allowed to handle any firearms unless you are at the stall shooting. You have to step back to a line about 5 feet behind the stall when you are not shooting. There is always at least on range master walking up and down the line checking on people. Other shooters will also, not hesitate to report you or intervene if you are violating one of the rules. Finally, if you violate the rules you pretty much get banned. At first I thought the people were uptight, but after seeing that I am going to be sure to thank them for such diligence.

That is what this was about. Unfortunately, letting someone who is that disturbed around guns is a horrible idea. I have worked with mentally ill people before and have a degree in psychology. They are a constant danger to themselves and those around them when they do not get help...remember the woman who drowned her kids in the bathtub...its just sad.

for them to be on their guard and you can usually kill them with a ball point pen. you don't need a gun to do this. it was the tool at hand and she used it. but if she had wanted to kill him while we was doing the dishes by shoving a carving knife into his neck at the base of his skull or by slitting his arteries or veins (take your pick)on either side of said neck it would have been just as effective.

the problem isn't the gun...it is the person wielding it...and THAT is what should have been managed here. i don't necessarily know how...but she should not have had a gun given her history...

And the article points out that even though she had a history of mental illness and could not have purchased a gun, there was nothing under Florida law to stop her from renting one.

I do not blame this on guns, I blame it on the terrible mental health care in this country. She would have found a way to do what the voices in her head told her to do if she could not have used a gun. It just would have been harder for her to kill her son.
