My sister said something disturbing RE: Chris Brown & Rihanna
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 08:24 PM by Clintonista2
My sister (11 years old) thinks that Rihanna is culpable for the beating she got because "she started the argument." My jaw dropped and I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

1. You better start talking to her,
and you better do it RIGHT NOW!!!

Great that you spotted it and that you're upset about it. That kind of thinking will set your sister up for a very dangerous life. She's listening to what the other kids are saying, so you've got a big job, but, for her sake, save her now.

It is NEVER allowed. EVER. No one hits anyone else. EVER.

Good luck...........................

2. Scary, but from what I've read she's not alone in that opinion
among girls. I hope you had one of those sister-to-sister chats. :hi:

3. There are resources on line on how to talk with pre-teens and teens about
domestic violence.

I agree with everyone else. Please talk to her now. If you get the chance, talk with her friends as well.

Hitting is NEVER a solution.

5. I recommend talking to the closest
domestic violence organization in your area and to the Superintendent of Schools. Most of these organizations travel to schools to give talks to young women and men about domestic violence. It might be a good idea for your sister and her friends to learn from a guest speaker.

7. I'm not surprised, unfortunately
When this whole Rihanna/Brown thing first happened I saw a number of young girls (teen/preteen) on Oprah and some other show talking about how she deserved it. It was either "self defense" because she slapped him first or she deserved it because "boys can only be pushed so far" with a woman yelling at them. Note: I do not know if she actually did slap him but that was their reasoning. When questioned further about the self defense claim, it did not matter to the young women if Chris Brown retaliated with much more force.
