“Democrats skirmish in ranks” If Dems can’t compromise on racial quotas, how can the U.S. demand
that Israel and Palestinians reach a compromise?

JACKSON — There’s dissension within the Mississippi Democratic Party, and much of it surrounds the appointment of its executive director and executive committee vice chairman and their race.

Some party members, led by vice chairwoman Barbara Blackmon of Canton, at a news conference Friday urged Chairman Jamie Franks to remove Sam Hall as executive director and Eduardo Martinez as interim executive vice chairman. They oversee the party’s administrative committee, which can hire and fire staff.

Keelan Sanders previously held the position full-time and Rosalind Rawls had been serving on a temporary basis since late last year. Both Sanders and Rawls are black. Hall is white.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

The party’s bylaws require the executive vice chairman to be of the opposite race of the chairman. Blackmon said the rule was adopted in 1980 as a way “to bring the races together.”

IMO we can't just say that's Mississippi and ignore the problem, we have to acknowledge it exists in various degrees in every state and major metropolitan area.

1. Wow. Dems always skirmish. That doesn't mean that a viable
agreement between Israel and Palestine should be off the table. That's world politics and peace you're talking about.

I can't even believe you used Mississippi as an example. :eyes:

2. Mississippi? .............
No offense, but I don't know that the Mississippi Democratic Party represents the country. (This IS the home of Gene Taylor, after all). It's not exactly the San Francisco County Democratic Party we're talking about here.

11. LOL, if we Dems allow ethnic/cultural lines to divide and polarize us, how can we ask voters to
choose our candidate for the most important position in the World to which other nations and people of all ethnic and cultures look to for solutions that plague the world like a terminal disease?

15. So if the chairman is
Asian, what is the opposite? :hide:

BTW, let me say that our state party is dysfunctional and needs some real leadership. We got blown out last year and I fear for the same next year and the statewide election in 2011.

I'm 75% European and 25% Filipino in ancestry. What is my opposite?

21. So Barbara Blackmon is a White woman and there is no such thing as "opposite race"

very strange. I know you didn't invent this as you gave a link to the article which I read. But these 2 sentences are truly bizarre when put together: "The party’s bylaws require the executive vice chairman to be of the opposite race of the chairman. Blackmon said the rule was adopted in 1980 as a way “to bring the races together.” Using the bizarre non-existent "opposite race" to facilitate "bring the races together." :wtf: I hope this crew is not looked up to as community role-models.

22. "Opposite race" must have been a construction of the era when racial politics was black or white.
Hispanics, Asians, and multi-racial people did not have to be officially considered in order to achieve a "diversity" and "fairness". Given the racial makeup and history of the Democratic party in Mississippi, the "opposite race" rule might have been a useful tool to achieve some level of "diversity" and "fairness". Today is is rightly viewed as anachronistic and limited in its view of ethnic diversity in the party.

I do see the point of the OP. While the Mississippi Democratic party (not to mention, I'm sure, the repubs there) may be perceived as "backward", by our standards, for its rigid rules regarding race and ethnicity, neither has the Middle East shown much evidence of inclusiveness with regard to these. (It may "just be Mississippi" so we can laugh it off, but what if it is "just Israel/Gaza"? Can we laugh that off, too.) The mindset that produced "opposite race" in Mississippi exists in the Middle East as well.

26. Thanks, I wish more DUers would discuss this issue, IMO it is a factor in many inter party disputes
that divide and polarize those of us under the so-called "big tent" Democratic Party.

Ethnic divisions exist within even our own party, it's easy to tell others to get over their ethnic divisions, far more difficult to solve our own problems in that regard.

Edited for clarity.
