Gun Violence Thread; April 8, 2009.
The shootings and killings are happening with such frequency lately, that I figured it might help to compile them in one place.

Let me know what you think.

Here are the stories (so far) from today:

Please feel free to add stories that you've come across.

Folks, no matter what side of the "issue" you're on, we have a problem here.

1. It's gruesome but a good idea
There have been so many I find I get them confused, and when you want to address the problem of gun violence, having the facts handy is helpful. I suppose you'll update it in the days/weeks to come? I hope you won't need to, but in light of the stress of this economy, I think the writing is on the wall.

As I write this though, I can't help but feeling that the horses have already left the barn, this country is awash in guns. I fear we may be swimming in a sea of blood soon.

2. Yes. I will start one everyday. Unless someone else does.
I'm not particularly informed on this topic, just concerned.

I too am starting to get them confused, overlooking events, etc. because they are happening so frequently. I figure that we can't address this problem if we don't "see" it.

What is particularly concerning to me is the dramatic upswing in police shootings. Domestic violence killings have, tragically, always been quite common, but the increase in both police shootings and mass killings are both undeniable.

I don't know what the answer is, but we've got to find one.

5. BBC News - America: Four Oakland policemen shot dead
'Four police officers have been killed in shootings in Oakland, California.

A 26-year-old man on parole allegedly opened fire on the police after he was pulled over on Saturday afternoon.

The suspect escaped after shooting two officers but was killed himself hours later in a gunfight with police in which two more died.

One of the officers was pronounced brain dead on Sunday and was on life support while a decision was made regarding organ donation.'

Maybe if you took away the guns from our troops, they would stop killing themselves.

10. Do you deny that there is a problem?
If not, then what is wrong with discussing it?

If you do deny there is a problem, then what is your explanation for the recent increase in mass and police shootings?

12. The links I posted are all from April 2009. Feel free to check the legal examples of self defense.
"Some" of the problem is that all states do not have the same laws concerning gun ownership. All guns should be registered. All owners or potential purchasers should pass a background check, gun safety and self defense class. No person with a record of mental or emotional problems should have a gun. No person with a record of domestic violence should have a gun. No person with a dishonorable military discharge should have a gun. Certainly no felon should have a gun. Automatic weapons should be banned. I'd say that if those were the law in all states we could greatly reduce the accidents and "crazy" shootings.

14. Feel free to post a daily counter thread.
Describing these incidents of "self-defense". I was searching google with the keyword "shooting" and it did not bring up any such events for today.

Also, there's no need to resort to name calling.
