Egypt preparing red carpet for Netanyahu

The Egyptian president adds fuel to the fire by inviting hawkish Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to a resort in the Red Sea.

Hosni Mubarak -- under fire for his support in the imposition of a 21-month Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip -- stirred controversy on Monday when Israel revealed the latest Egyptian effort to lend a helping hand to Tel Aviv.

Netanyahu's office said in a statement that Mubarak phoned the newly elected prime minister on Monday to congratulate him on his new appointment and to invite the Israeli premier to Egypt.

"The prime minister has welcomed the invitation to stay at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, and a meeting will apparently take place before long," the statement said without giving a date.

It went on to say that Netanyahu stressed to Mubarak that "peace between our two countries is of great importance and there is a common interest in deepening and expanding peace so as to rebuff those who threaten us."

1. He's been a target of the fundies for a long time, for not renouncing
the treaty Egypt has with Israel. The granddaddy of Islamist fundamentalist groups, the Muslim Brotherhood, was founded in Egypt - they were responsible for the assassination of Sadat - and it was his war against them that has turned his regime increasingly dictatorial over the years.

He's been walking a fine line for years.
