A subpoena is used to obtain critic's identity from Google

A blogger critical of First Baptist Church Pastor Mac Brunson wants to know why his Web site was investigated by a police detective who is also a member of the minister’s security detail.

<snip>

Rich also wants to know why Hinson revealed his name to the church despite finding no wrongdoing. Hinson obtained a subpoena from the State Attorney’s Office requiring Google Inc. to reveal the author of the blog.

<snip>

The intelligence detective opened the criminal investigation Sept. 29 into the identity and “possible criminal overtones” of the blog, fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com.

<snip>

Two additional bloggers investigated by Hinson said they were also not contacted. They learned of the probe in middle or late March. Their blogs do not focus on First Baptist.

<snip>

Jacksonville resident Tiffany Croft said the aim of her blog is to be an online source of information about the accusations against the Rev. Darrell Gilyard, the former Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church pastor accused of sexual misconduct. Gilyard regularly preached at First Baptist in the early 1990s.

1. "a member of his security detail" - that is mind blowing in itself - what
preacher needs a security detail?

3. So the church is rallying around their preacher instead of searching for the truth.

4. There has always been a whiff of the foul oder of corruption about the
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office way back to when I first came to the First Coast thirty-five years ago.

I attented a service at Jacksonville's First Baptist Church with a friend whose father was a member somewhere in the mid to late seventies. I was repelled by the huge scale of the church even then. The message wasn't one I could agree with either.

Similar to GWB, these people want a theocracy... as long as they are the theocrats in charge.

5. Wow, quite a story over at his blog
This new pastor seems to be one of these idiots preaching "prosperity gospel" - meaning the pastor becomes prosperous by fleecing his sheep.

9. And on what grounds did the State's Attorney General issue such a subpoena: the stench of something
well past rotten? :P

12. That's what I want to know. There are supposed to be strict
criteria for subpoenas, they can't just be issued because someone feels like knowing something. Someone should also be investigating this state's "attorney" for improper conduct and misuse of office. Sure as hell wouldn't be the first time for a prosecutor, they can be more corrupt than you can imagine.

8. Yep. That's how it's done around here.
Usually, someone in law enforcement gets compromised by connections or other method.

10. Oh, his rights were violated
So now he complains.

From his blog: I always thought that privacy information like that requested by Detective Hinson was highly protected, that for a law enforcement official to get access to it required them to pass a high hurdle with much scrutiny, having a burden of some proof that the information was absolutely necessary in the investigation of a specific crime. These subpoenas were issued by Detective Hinson, approved by the Assistant State Attorney, and in a few days Detective Hinson had the information he requested.

Welcome to the patriot act.

Who was the first to yell traitor, when the left pointed out that parts of the PA are unconstitutional?
the religious right.
Just as the left has been saying, there is a separation between church and state. It never bothers the religious right to push their belief onto others by way of influencing laws and law makers. They then cry foul when the state reverses the favor, interfering with their rights. Separation of state works 2 ways.
If a person wants to protect their Constitutional rights they must protect everyone's; whether they agree with it or not. Because sooner or later they will come after yours.
