Boston hospital performs face transplant

A team of eight surgeons at Brigham and Women’s Hospital performed a 17-hour partial face transplant yesterday, only the second time such an operation has been done in the United States.

The plastic surgery team, led by Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, performed the transplant yesterday on a man who suffered traumatic facial injuries in a fall.

The team of seven plastic surgeons, one ear, nose and throat surgeon, nurses, anesthesiologists and residents replaced the mid-face area of the patient including the nose, hard palate, upper lip, facial skin, muscles of facial animation and the nerves that power them and provide sensation, according to a statement the hospital released today. It was the second time a partial face transplant was performed in the United States, according to the hospital.


The transplantation was made possible through organ donation, according to the hospital.
