Oversized flags blamed in five-car pile-up
Oversized flags blamed in five-car pile-up

MARSHALL COUNTY – When you hear the low roar of raspy pipes mixed with the smell of engine exhaust, fried funnel cakes and sugar spun cotton candy filling the air, you know Tater Day is right around the corner.

And one of the most recognizable, yet controversial sights of the annual week-long festival is the display of oversized flags by local youth.

But after an accident that occurred last Wednesday morning in front of the Dairy Queen restaurant in Draffenville, law enforcement have banned large gatherings of the flag flying vehicles.

Each morning before school, dozens of trucks, carrying the oversized flags gathered in the parking lot next to Dairy Queen.

It’s been an annual tradition since the students were told several years ago they could not amass in such numbers on school grounds due to visibility hazards for pedestrians.

1. I remember seeing this one clown in Bettendorf
He had two big flags - both of which were probably originally intended for a flagpole in someone's front yard - bolted to the back of his truck as he sped down the road. I found myself wondering if that was even legal or not and if he could see out his mirrors with all those big flags flapping around like that.

3. I looked and looked, but I don't see the guy holding the "Get a Brain Morans" sign anywhere...
I mean, this is obviously the redneck version of "Where's Waldo", right?

5. Well, it is called Tater Day
Tater Day is a large festival in Benton, Kentucky held on the first Monday in April.

It was started in the late 1800s as a celebration of the first day of spring, and a time when all of the townsfolk would get together and trade sweet potatoes. The biggest part of the festival is the Parade, which completes one circuit around the town. It includes Confederate Flags, Political floats, Marshall County High School marching band, horse and buggies, clowns, vintage cars, horses, Ms. Tater Day, and other things for which Marshall County is known. There is also junior ms. tater that is allowed for little girls ages 5 to 12, and a little Ms., little Mr., tiny Miss, and baby Ms. Tater day pageants and floats for the younger kids. Tater Day also has carnival rides, games, a market, mule pulls, and several other exciting events. Ms.tater announces a speech about how grateful she is to be Ms. Tater. Other exciting events are the biggest potato contest that attracts large potatoes from across the town and a potato eating contest. They find the potatoes from the Potato bake sale hosted by MCHS. All in all The Tater Day festival has a plethora of exciting events and is for tater-lovers of all ages!

Tater Day was held on April 6, 2009 in Benton, Kentucky. Much to everyone's dismay Misty Clark was unable to attend. The author was unavoidably detained by an ingrown toenail and missed the festivities also.
