A suburban banker befriended some of her elderly customers, then used the trust she had gained to steal more than $100,000 from their accounts, DuPage County authorities said Friday.
Amy R. Esposito used the money she stole from her customers to pay for everything from her children's orthodontic work to jewelry purchases to her own credit card bills, authorities contend.
The 41-year-old Wheaton resident targeted only west suburban Community Bank customers with whom she developed such a rapport that she knew they didn't regularly check their bank statements, prosecutors contended.
"They trusted her. She knew they trusted her," DuPage County prosecutor Helen Kapas-Erdman said Friday after Esposito was ordered jailed on $500,000 bail.
Esposito was indicted earlier on 30 counts of fraud, theft and money laundering for allegedly stealing from at least eight customers while she worked as a senior personal banker at Community Bank-Wheaton/Glen Ellyn.
Some of the customers she targeted were in their 80s and 90s, officials said. .........(more)
