to coin a phrase. It's Fake News fault. To what depths does one of their idiots have to stoop to get thrown off?

None. There's nothing too foul or un American their idiots could do on the air to get axed.

5. As long as we have a Constitution
he is entitled to his First Amendment right to free speech.

And I am entitled to my right to ignore the bat shit crazy fuck.

If we are not intelligent enough to use the stupid shit he says against him and the rest of the far right nut jobs, whoa are we.

11. I agree
But until evidence that a crime has been committed, I have some real difficulty removing 1st amendment rights. Censorship is a real evil and once you remove it from the cage..............nothing good will come from it.

How would you have felt if when numbnuts was President they removed Air America because it was inciting the "left"?

My opinion was/is the same. First amendment rights shall be un-infringed, unless as you say, a crime has been committed.

33. Numbnuts didn't need to remove Air America. It was already corporately marginalized.
Still is thanks to the corporate cluster fuck that is modern radio.

And crimes already have been committed spurned on by hate radio. (Right/left wing doesn't matter.)

91. I agree with 1st Amendment protection
And while I don't agree with anything Beck says, he can continue to say it to the limit of his Constitutional rights. At the same time, anyone is free to use his/her free speech rights to take the show off the air. The 1st Amendment is a two-way street.

BTW, here's a case that has always intrigued me. It's when the Supreme Court actually decided that there are limits on free speech:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaplinsky_v._New_Hampshire
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighting_words_doctrine

Yes, it was a long time ago, but it is a standing Supreme Court ruling. I don't think it's perfectly applicable in today's world though, but it does allow for restrictions when something is said to specifically incite violence. This is a gray area though and can be interpreted in many ways (e.g. would publishing the infamous Danish cartoons in the US be subject to this, since it would very likely incite unrest?).

In any case, RW wing radio is not as effective as it used to be. The last election clearly showed its waning influence on politics. However, it still is effective to rile up some lunatics, in some cases to violent levels. And that definitely is scary.

10. the only problem is that another will immediately fill the "void" if he's kicked off
you might remember that he has risen to his current state of "popularity" only very recently. Before this, he was kind of obscure, got a slot on CNN, and now has suddenly risen to prominence on the rw scene.

If he for some reason is disabled, there are plenty of other sick, pea-brained, paranoid "radio hosts" and other obscure windbags just waiting to be tapped for his slot.

have you read the actual decision?

he is NOT violating the law.

yelling fire in a crowded theatre is - see: imminence, etc.

furthermore, yelling "fire" has exactly ZERO political content, and is thus looked at even more askance.

i wish people who used the fire in a theater analogy were at least familiar WITH the case.

18. How does being taken off the air "suppress speech"?
I looked over the First Amendment, and nowhere in there is an articulated right to have a national platform for spewing nonsense. Beck can say anything he wants, but I don't read that he has the "right" to be nationally broadcast and receive what amounts to a sinecure for simulating setting people on fire.

I'd appreciate your insights into how removing a hatemonger from the nation's airwaves constitutes a suppression of that person's rights.

20. "suppress" it, or make it unprofitable?
it is not "suppression" to simply say, we find this person's speech inflammatory and disruptive of the public order and refuse to support those who pay him to talk like this.

Fred Phelps is "free" to say whatever he wants, but would you patronize him with your business (if he had something to "sell")?

If you think them anything more than a corporate media outlet then you're a fool. None-the-less, they are a corporate media outlet that doesn't have an entire political party at the helm. It's about ratings and money and nothing more.

And say...you started comparing apples to oranges. Let's not change the topic to the orange before we truly understand the apple, no?

Actually if you want the center of the political spectrum then take that Poli Sci class. Your brain might melt. But you can blame that on "Liberal Academia", no?

68. You see I don't, and you're welcome to search my posts but I feel America *is*...
better served when she governs from up the center in a state of poise...and 'balanced poise' is not what FOXnews has in mind clearly. Compared to FOXnews? MSNBC is the virtual *essence* of what is objective. FOXnews isn't even required to be truthful so why bother being objective.

You gotta be an employee of FOXnews not to see thus stuff

The Ruling

The jury awarded me with $425,000 but gave nothing to Steve, who had been forced to act as his own attorney. Steve repeatedly showed dogged determination in questioning many of the witnesses and getting them to admit some of the most damaging things that ultimately undermined the Fox defense. In the end, we suspect Steve received no award because of what seems to be an erroneous instruction from the judge to the jury. The jurors were told, incorrectly we believe, that in order to find for each of us, they must determine there was no other reason each of us was fired other than the fact we resisted orders to lie on the air and threatened to blow the whistle to the FCC. In any event, we view the verdict as a win for both of us. Our trial was never about money. It was about a reporter's duty to resist and blow the whistle loud and strong when pressured to lie and distort the news over the public airwaves.

Fox immediately announced that it would appeal. On October 12 and again on November 3, the network argued to the judge that he should vacate the jury's verdict. During the trial itself, McDaniels had claimed that Fox merely wanted "to get our good name back" and repair the damage to its credibility which we had inflicted by telling our story on our website and speaking to groups around the world. During the Motion to Vacate, however, McDaniels seemed to toss the network's credibility in the garbage by making an argument that any legitimate news organization would be embarrassed to voice. "There is no law, rule or regulation against slanting the news," he told the judge.

87. Objectivity is not the issue.
Truth is the issue. Can you point to an instance where Olbermann or Maddow have not been truthful. Sorry, I can't vouch for the MSNBC right wingers like Scarborough.

On FOX, all you have to hear is the "Obama is a socialist (or communist, or Muslim, or Kenyan)" line, and you can pretty much discount anything else they say.

Hopefully, you'll get tired of us before they TS you, but enjoy your stay.

on air every single day spewing their talking points.

Don't remember seeing any former Democratic congresscritters or presidential candidates on the Fox payroll.

77. I disagree. Strongly.
I actually think it's a good thing that Fox has chosen to place a full-bore wingnut in the public spotlight, out in front of God and everyone. Beck is the far-right poster boy, after all--the new, post-Limbaugh voice of the Republican party. Moderate and independent voters take a look and they see a sweating, weeping, bug-eyed looneytune who can barely utter a coherent thought, let alone string two thoughts together. It's the best advertising for progressivism and the Democratic party I can imagine—and Fox is giving it to us for free. I hope they give Coulter a show, too.

95. When Glenn Beck was on CNN Headline News he seemed more normal.
I agreed with him about 10% of the time, and I could see why he was popular with some people. He found common sense starting points (almost everyone would agree with him on some basic things), but then he delved into wacky RW blather.

I have not seen him on FAUX, but I have seen some clips that make me think FOX has taken his leash off, and I doubt that he even tries to start his arguments from a reasonable place anymore.

84. Why that is the republican party of our time. They want the president dead they want the government
and our institutions violently attacked. They want the country to fail.

But they don't want to do any of themselves, they don't have the guts. They sit and hope someone will do those things, and glen beck gives them something to watch on tv where they can dream it can come true and pratice eating with one hand.

Even with small things they could do.

The ones not working
Praise the governors who refused stimulus money, yet go every week and say yes I tried to find a job, none there, now give me my government handout.

The ones working
Call the stimulus bill socialism and wealth redistribution, yet don't go to HR and ask their withholding to be returned to the level it was before the $20 or so a week extra popped into their checks.

I was in shock and tried not to blurt out what I was thinking. This mom is wealthy and a bit on the snobbish side. We tend to think of Mr. Beck as appealing to less affluent but I think that we would be surprised about his followers.

...when Rush could scare people just with the specter of tax hikes. This is post-9/11 America, and Jack Bauer informs most people's political opinions.

Beck has to turn the drooling paranoia up to eleven, just to be noticed. Fox, after all, is his last chance to keep that big TV money rolling in. When he loses this job, it's gonna be back to hate radio. That much of his desperation is genuine.

He's terrified of no longer being rich.
