Palin AG Pick Ross - If a guy can't rape his wife who can he rape?
While priming her political machine for a likely 2012 presidential primary run, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has fomented a scandal that threatens to further erode her reputation in the Last Frontier. In March, Palin nominated Wayne Anthony Ross for attorney general. Ross, a colorful far-right lawyer and longtime Palin ally who sports his initials, W.A.R., on his Hummer’s vanity plates, was once considered a shoo-in for confirmation. However, his nomination was thrown into grave peril when his opponents presented evidence that he called homosexuals “degenerates,” leveled invective against an African-American student offended by a statue of a Klansman, vowed to undermine the sovereignty of Native American tribes, and allegedly defended men who rape their wives. According to two sources close to the confirmation hearings, Palin may ask Ross to withdraw before his appointment comes to a vote.

According to Burton, who detailed the allegations for me, Ross allegedly declared during a speech before a 1991 gathering of the “father’s rights” group Dads Against Discrimination, “If a guy can’t rape his wife, who’s he gonna rape?”

Palin’s hopes for a swift confirmation process were dashed April 10 when Leah Burton, a veteran lobbyist on children’s issues and domestic violence, submitted a letter to the Alaska State Judiciary Committee claiming that Ross publicly defended spousal rape. According to Burton, who detailed the allegations for me, Ross allegedly declared during a speech before a 1991 gathering of the “father’s rights” group Dads Against Discrimination, “If a guy can’t rape his wife, who’s he gonna rape?” (In a subsequent letter, Ross denied the remark and claimed, “I don’t talk like that!”)

Burton said Ross’s statement was consistent with his overarching attitude toward women’s issues. She claimed that he once said during a debate on the Equal Rights Amendment, “If a woman would keep her mouth shut, there wouldn’t be an issue with domestic violence.” Burton also maintained she has been in touch with “a number” of domestic-violence victims who witnessed Ross make “horrible” statements, but are too intimidated to speak out. “Alaska is a very small state and it’s terrifying for these victims to come forward because they’re afraid of retribution,” Burton told me.

Since Burton’s testimony, her father, former Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Richard Burton, wrote a letter of his own demanding to Ross that he withdraw his nomination. “You sir, speak and act like the kind of bully I met many times when responding to domestic-violence calls, some of the most dangerous situations police officers are often in,” Burton wrote. Ross reacted with characteristic fury to the Burtons’ broadsides, barking to reporters that if “anybody said that to me, we'd have a little confrontation because that's a bunch of crap.” At the same time, a grassroots group raising support for Palin's presidential bid called Conservatives4Palin attacked Leah Burton as an anti-Christian "fringe nutcase."

1. It wasn't even necessary to point out that this asshole drives a Hummer
I could have deduced it from the rest of the article.

Maybe he has fantasies about raping his would be boss.

2. Ross on Palin - She was provocative. She looked really good didn't she?
A news clip from KTUU in Alaska, pulled by HotAirPundit, features a bizarre back and forth between Alaska Attorney General-designee Wayne Anthony Ross at his confirmation hearing in the Alaska State House of Representatives, being questioned by Republican Rep. Jay Ramras. Ramras asked Ross to give his opinion on what Governor Sarah Palin had "done wrong." Ross, who apparently doesn't "like people taking shots at courageous women," offered, "She's been shot at so much, she doesn't want to reach out." Okay, this is pretty par for the course, I guess. Then comes this bizarre exchange:

RAMRAS: She was wearing Arctic Cat gears and leathers--

ROSS: She was provocative. She looked really good didn't she?

RAMRAS: Yes...Well no, not to a lot of Alaska she didn't. To a lot of Alaska she looked like a walking billboard.

3. That's an excellent summation...

I've never met Mr. Ross personally (although I've known secretaries who worked for him), but I've been aware of him by reputation ever since 1975 when I first started working in the legal community here. Sarah could not have picked a more controversial lawyer for this position. As the Native gentleman in the article said, she is quite literally rubbing our faces in the dirt with this choice and basically hoping we don't like it.

It's not clear if we have the votes in the legislature to reject him, but the letter from Richard Burton can only help. He has a good reputation, and his word means something. Hopefully, Sarah does the right thing and pulls the nomination.

Please keep your fingers crossed for us on this. It's time for Alaska to move past this "wild west" mentality that we've had to contend with for so many years. Our Constitution provides the basis for a genuinely progressive agenda here if people will just take the right steps to move forward. Sarah Palin has been a disaster.

If nothing else, it teaches the lesson to vet, vet, vet when it comes to politicians. She looked pretty good at the beginning, but now that she's exposed her true nature, we all feel really duped. She's just like the obnoxious popular girl in high school -- or Lucy with the football. I really can't stand the woman, and I used to think she was okay.

6. she can't do the right thing, blue. she never will. a guy at my job
said Sarah won't get re-elected next time. that is huge. she losing him, she loses period. watching her talk to the press is a revelation. look at her face. she can barely keep the condescension and contempt hidden. she is also getting older, her face looks older and less youthful to me. all that evil showing up on the outside now.

7. I agree, she looked terrible at that press conference,
and the contempt did just drip from her lips. I really think she's losing it. I'm really anxious to see how she treats us once she gets back from her anti-choice rally where she will no doubt be adored by her crazy fans chanting her name.

If she has no use for us, she ought to do us a favor and resign. I can think of so many others who would do a better job of governing Alaska -- even some conservatives I can think of, if we can't break free from that curse.

9. Then it's a pretty sure thing she'll make a run in 2012
She'll be free to roam the country without the burden of state governing responsibilites.

Ugh!

At the very least, a primary fight between her and Newt would be very entertaining! They'd be tearing each other a new asshole every hour!!! LOL!

4. this Ross is a real piece of work.
Richard Burton calls him out as a bully, so he proves Burton's point by threatening him? What an asshole.
