The Conficker Eye Chart.

Six embedded images in the chart come from six secured website, conficker could block one or more of the images.
If you see all six, you're probably safe.
Instructions included.

1. I expected a joke,
something to come leaping off the screen, roaring, but, no, this is on the level.

And my Internet(s) machine appears to be clean. That's good to know.

Thank you for this.

33. Don't worry, run the McAfee tools linked below when you have a chance.
And back up anything vital.

But be careful with the backups, too, because they may carry the virus.

(you'll have to run the detection tool on the backup files later if not earlier. If you debug before backup, no problem)

46. yup - pretty much most of them
Conficker blocks you from going to most computer related sites where you can get help to clean the virus or obtain cleaning tools to get rid of it. So, pretty much all anti-virus websites like mcafee.com or computer help sites like bleepingcomputer.com... basically any site where you can get information or download cleaning programs to kill the booger. When I got it in January, I was able to find an obscure site forum to get tech help that the developer must not have known about. There are several varients of Conficker each subsequent one covering more sites to block you out of... so the later the varient, the tougher it is to kill.

For most people, it takes obtaining a cleaning tool capable of killing the virus from a non-infected computer, and changing the name of the .exe file for the program to something Conficker wouldn't recognize and loading/intalling/running it on the infected computer. Changing the name of the file is vital as Conficker recognizes them and doesn't allow installation (the clever shit).

Incidently, I DID get the Microsoft patch put out in October when it came out, yet I still got Conficker in January... therefore the patch must not be covering all the varients especially considering that subsequent varients came out after that October patch. Most people seemed to have gotten hit with Conficker in January and February.

I'm sure eventually another varient will come out and it will be even more ghastly then the last one.

never give up, do they? I've been lucky, lately. {knock wood} A few years ago I got hit with some pretty destructive stuff after I let my kids use my system. Took me a few weeks to find and fix the problems. Two important weeks. Ouch.

Thanks for the full explanation.

24. OK, now try these three links:
http://www.secureworks.com/

http://www.symantec.com/index.jsp

Let me know if either of these fail to open.

If one or both don't open, try downloading the McAfee tools here:

http://www.mcafee.com/us/threat_center/conficker.html

Upper right of page, one is the detection tool, the other is a removal tool.

They are download files.

34. Try this...
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 12:43 AM by TorchTheWitch
Try going to any well known computer site like www.bleepingcomputer.com www.mcafee.com www.avg.com www.symantec.com etc. If you can't get to those websites, you got it.

You can also try doing a web search for anything. Conduct a web search and click on a few links that result from your search. If you don't go to the link you clicked on but instead are re-routed to other sites like shopping sites or directory pages, you got it.

Conficker allows your anti-virus to WORK (run scans) but it doesn't let you update so it won't download any updates that will kill the virus. At the end of the scan it will just tell you you're clean when you aren't (because it didn't let you update). A lot of people were duped into thinking they had no infections because they were able to run scans and were told they were clean.

Only a hammer can stop this.
