Richard Phillips, Chesley Sullenberger provide lessons for our captains of industry

First, US Airways Capt. Chesley Sullenberger followed a miracle landing in the Hudson River by walking the length of the plane twice to ensure everyone was out before he evacuated.

Now we have Merchant Marine Capt. Richard Phillips offering himself as hostage so Somali pirates would leave his crew alone.

Both men were acting in the tradition of duty and selflessness long upheld by captains at sea and in the air.

"What we're really talking about is true leadership," he said Monday. "This is often confused with power and authority. True leadership is service, and service is taking care of your people."

We would all be better off if the so-called captains of industry and finance shared this view. Too many of them see leadership as an opportunity to grab as much as they can for themselves, whatever the cost to their people and to the country as a whole.
