A lot of mockery has been made of Fox New's promotion of "teabagging" this being a protest presumably in the spirit of the Boston Tea Party where, on April 15th, tax day, people will protest the bailout (and it's tax cuts?) by either tossing tea into some body of water or sending a tea bag to a government representative.
The mockery of these protests comes from the fact that "teabagging" has a lurid meaning which, somehow or other, was unknown to Fox News until it was too late.
But maybe we should stop making fun of them. On closer examination, I find the term amazingly apt. If I were a Senator on the receiving end of such teabags, I'd thank Fox News very much indeed. Teabags have to be sent snail mail, so teabaggers are buying envelopes and stamps, thus giving money to the government and helping to keep the ailing U.S. Postal Service alive. In buying the tea, the protesters stimulate the economy (and let's not forget sales tax!). If the teabags are sent to government representatives, then those representatives don't have to use taxpayer money to buy any tea for themselves or their office workers. Very frugal thinking there. Finally, wise traders will certainly buy stock in Lipton's, thus helping the stock market. Fox News has indicated that the stock market is a yardstick of the economy. When it's doing well, the economy, and the president are doing well. It's very clever of Fox News to think up this way to help strengthen the stock market and confidence in the economy and the president.
Maybe the "teabagging" term isn't inaccurate at all! Fox seems to be getting a lot of people to lick the government's balls.
