Transcript of Negotiations Between U.S. Navy and Somali Pirates

Now that Captain Richard Phillips has been rescued by the U.S. Navy, the Defense Department has declassified a transcript of communications between the U.S.S. Bainbridge and the Somali pirates who were holding Phillips captive aboard a lifeboat.

NAVY HOSTAGE NEGOTIATOR: This is the United States Navy. Are you prepared to negotiate?

LEAD PIRATE: Yes. We want one million dollars.

NAVY: Sorry, that's not going to happen.

PIRATE: Okay, then two million.

NAVY: What we mean is that we don't pay ransom.

PIRATE: Oh.

NAVY: Plus, when you're negotiating and your first demand is rejected, your second demand should be lower.

PIRATE: Thanks, we'll remember that next time. That is very helpful.

NAVY: Our pleasure. Last week we were able to help some other pirates save a ton of money by switching to—

PIRATE: Geico. We know that joke.
