You may NEVER AGAIN watch any of the following movies with any sense of moral superiority:

*Any movie where Native Americans are "brutal" or "primative" due to practices of: scalping, burning at the stake, tying people to anthills, etc. These "old school" techniques are currently being reevaluated as to their effectiveness in our modern times.

*Any movie about WWI or WWII involving Japanese or Germans who do bad things* to many people because they think it's good for their country. *(Tiger cages, beating, slave labor, starvation, yada yada yada)

Basically any movie where the villain or villains treat the hero or antihero violently or cruelly. They're just using "enhanced interrogation" techniques and what the hell is your problem?!

1. We saw "The Reader" last night. Female guard "following orders" sentenced to death.
I just don't think that happily going forward and NOT punishing the law breakers and torturers is going to fly with the rest of the world (or anyone left of far right, for that matter). Come on, Obama. You have a job you need to finish.

2. That movie should have won Best Picture
the script and the performances were absolutely riveting in a way that "Slumdog Millionaire" was not.

3. Couldn't agree more. Frost/Nixon as well.

I'm sure this is not a popular opinion, but Slumdog was candy movie for the masses....I like movies that make you think a bit - but that's just me. Nice thing about the arts - no wrong answers!

Doubt and Revolutionary Road and Frozen River are next on the Netflix queue!

5. Ah, Doubt
that took me back to Catholic school, it was that chilling! Also great performances.

It just seems kind of funny that the movie that won Best Picture had NO nominations in either the Best or Supporting actor and actress categories.

6. Well your first example is just racist stereotyping anyways
But feel free to share with us which movies depicting Native Americans as brutal savages, scalping white settlers, you find enjoyable?

7. Do you remember the first time you watched Midnight Express
how outraged you were that any prison could treat any human that way?

I think of that often, how naive we were.

This is the second time in three hours that film has been brought up.

9. We are, even us, getting toughened and shock fatigued. I saw
parts of one of my most revered films of my youth "The Bridge on the River Kwai" a few days ago. And I could not feel again the horror I did then about the inhumane treatment of the leading man, David Niven.
I pondered just what you are saying, and it made me extremely sad.

16. FWIW
"The Bridge on the River Kwai" was Alec Guiness not David Niven.
(As it happens, I watched it about a fortnight ago)
:hi:

15. Yes, it can
And I've had posts here before deleted because I mentioned how much we are pissing on that...but facts are facts, and now it's "Ok, since you were just following orders."

13. In case you hadn't noticed amidst your garment rending
Plenty of Americans had already done lots of worse stuff "for the good of the country" well before WWI and WWII even happened, let alone movies being made about them.
