Obama should start moving military bases out of any state threatening to secede
Doesn't that make sense? Want to secede? Fine, but not with the US military. Texas has many US military bases that should be moved to states that would appreciate having them and that want to continue to belong to the US.

http://www.ehow.com/about_4661151_military-bases-texas.html

Types

There are seven Air Force bases in Texas: Brooks City in San Antonio, Dyess in Abilene, Goodfellow in San Angelo, Lackland in San Antonio, Laughlin in Johnstone, Randolph in Universal City and Sheppard in Wichita Falls.

The Army has four bases in Texas: Camp Bullis in San Antonio, Fort Bliss in El Paso, Fort Hoodin Killeen and Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

There are three Navy Bases in Texas: Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, Fort Worth Naval Air Station and Joint Reserve Base and Ingleside Naval Station.

Features

Brooks is the home of the 311th Human Systems Wing and the School of Aviation Medicine. It is the top aviation medical center in the military.
Dyess is home to the B-1Bs and the 7th Bomber Wing.
Goodfellow is home to the 97th Air Mobility Wing.
Lackland is home to more than 120 units including the 37th Training Wing, the largest in the Air Force.
Laughlin Air Force Base is home to the 47th Flying Training Wing.
Randolph is home to the 12th Flying Training Wing,
Sheppard is home to the 82nd Training Wing.
Camp Bullis is home to the medical units out of Brooke Army Medical Center.
Fort Bliss is home to the US Army Air Defense Artillery School and four combat ADA brigades.
Fort Hood is home to 17 different divisions.
Fort Sam Houston is home base for combat medics.
Corpus Christi Naval Air Station is used mainly for pilot training.
Fort Worth Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base is home to fighter wings from the Air Force and the Air National Guard.
Ingleside Naval Station provides support for Mine Warfare forces.

Significance

Military bases are communities by themselves, with some of the largest having populations of between 50,000 and 75,000. They play a big part in the economy of the surrounding communities by providing employment as well as supporting local businesses.

Benefits

Military bases are open to the public in most cases. Many of them have museums and special exhibits. They are also open on holidays with special military parades, fireworks and festivals. They can be a big part of a Texas vacation.

1. I can agree, but there must be specific criteria
When a state's governor or four or more state legislators call for secession, time to pull the plug on military bases.

So Texas qualifies, but that keeps this from spreading to states that just have a few nutburgers calling for secession.

16. No, the criteria should be a statewide referendum where the people may vote.
Why allow a governor and a handful of legislators make a decision (which may never happen) impact an entire state? I am guessing that there may be more than a few Democrats in Texas as well as more than a few DUers.

2. Wouldn't be fair to Texas.
There's 24,000,000 people in Texas. They ought not all be put at risk because of a loudmouth governor and a few tea bagging jokers.

5. Couldn't agree more.
"When a state's governor or four or more state legislators call for secession, time to pull the plug on military bases". What the fuck does that even mean? When a state's governor MENTIONS secession? Because I don't think any elected official "called" for seccession. Not in a way that starts the ball rolling toward a vote or overt action in support of it.

Such childish hyperbole I read here sometimes. Excellent entertainment.

11. Are Texans "calling" for secession? I haven't heard anything yet, except
some crap from Tom Delay about 5 states.

12. My point.
I haven't heard anyone, including Gov. Perry, "threaten" or "call for" secession. So to me, these outrage du jour peeps calling for confiscation of military bases, federal highways, and other things are not much more than the entertainment of the day.

15. All they have to do is not vote for those fools.
If they vote for the Governor, they own it.

It's been in pretty short supply in most of the Texas secession threads over the last few days......

6. The people of Texas need to deal with this
and vote these clowns out of office, every last one of them. It shouldn't be hard to find a candidate who can explain quite clearly what secession would look like. You've provided an extensive list already.

If Texas thinks unemployment in the state is bad now, just see what happens if it is no longer part of the US. Then of course there is that messy Civil War stuff that no one should really want to repeat...

20. I can't believe people are talking about secession here as
though it's a possibility. Or even something that can be done. Secession is treason.

14. There are hundreds of bases in other countries. If a state
secedes, the bases are already there and will not have to be built from scratch.

Why not INSTEAD close down some of those other bases, bring the personnel home, bolster the existing bases at home, boost those local economies with the money currently being spent elsewhere, and perhaps the states will be better off, thus reducing their desire to secede.

22. Actually, LBJ closed down our Air Force base
...because our district didn't vote for him. It devastated the local economy and cemented an enmity for Democrats that has lasted over 40 years.
