Five people believed to be members of a single family were found dead this morning in a house in Frederick County, authorities said.

Just after 9 a.m., the county sheriff's office received a call from a relative who reported finding the five bodies in the home, on Washington Street in Middletown, a spokeswoman for the office said.

Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said investigators confirmed the deaths. She declined to say how the five appeared to have died. Authorities were awaiting a search warrant to investigate more closely, she said.

"Family members hadn't seen their loved ones for a few days," she said. "When they went there, they found the family and exited the home and called us."

1. Maybe I'm being dense, but why decline to say how they were killed?
With all the murder-suicides in the news, this story is going to get attention.

Can anyone help me understand why hiding this is a good idea?

2. And the the need for a search warrant also seems unusual?

3. I saw the brief press conference. The father shot himself....
The manner of death of the rest of the family is under investigation. Several sustained "slash injuries".
