Are you aware of how many hard working, solid Dems are in this state? It sure didn't strike me as an anti-American/Obama atmosphere when I was secretary for my district's primary. Just a room packed full of delighted Democrats, smiling at the poor Republicans in the next room, who couldn't get anyone to show up for their adorable "meeting".

I am a Texas Democrat. I am not moving. I love my state and I am willing to fight for it.

15. I think any secessionist movement will eventually have to

confront the reality of providing for not only their own needs, including their monetary structure, but also their own defense, foreign embassies, and the myriad other functions of the Feds that the right wing hotheads just never seem to think of. I'm sure some smart guy will come up with the kind of taxes Texans are going to have to start paying in order to pass themselves off as a separate country, and it's not going to be pretty.

While Texas does have lefties, they need to face the fact that nobody in the country does "tacky" like Texas, and that isn't going to win the state any popularity prizes.

Add to that the bible churches propagandizing good people to vote for hideous men like Cornyn and Delay, and you need to admit Texas has a big problem and isn't going to turn Democratic any time soon.

However, the secessionist movement isn't going to get any farther than adding up what it's going to cost.

As things stand right now it looks like Oklahoma, Washington, Hawaii, Missouri, Arizona, New Hampshire, Georgia, California, Michigan and Montana will all definitely consider sovereignty bills this year. They may be joined by Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Alaska, Kansas, Alabama, Nevada, Maine and Pennsylvania where legislators have pledged to introduce similar bills. Twenty states standing up to the federal government and demanding a return to constitutional principles is a great start, but it remains to be seen whether legislatures and governors are brave enough or angry enough to follow through. As the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress push for more expansion of federal power and spending that may help provide the motivation needed for the sovereignty movement to take off.

During the darkest days of Bush I wished that Washington would secede and join Canada, but much like Texas, it's not going to happen.

When our governor won the last election in a squeaker, the east side of state starting making noise about creating a new state because the rest of Washington was too liberal. A state law-maker shut them up by stating that he thought it was a good idea so that they could start funding their own roads. All you heard after that was crickets from the east side of state.

21. Freepers suffer from the delusion that Texas would be viable without Federal assistance

Texans don't seem to remember that they were begging for assistance from the United States when they were in danger of being annihilated by Mexican forces. They don't seem to remember that Texas uses almost as much Federal assistance as they pay in taxes to the Federal government. If they were to secede then all Federally funded programs would be withdrawn. Yes they have a decent amount of resources, but they would not have the glorious existence that the Freepers envision. We have prospered as a United country. The loss of a state would diminish the nation, but it would diminish the state that seceded much much more.

For example, for every 10 from a hard-working, God-fearing state like Oklahoma or Louisiana, there'd be no more than 1 admitted from places like Michigan or Illinois. None whatsoever from California or New Jersey, states where the people have already made a complete hash of it.

A politician might call for secession to appeal to populism, but there is no way it will happen-- in a decade at least.

There are no way these polls are accurate.

For one thing, people have to get worked up and angry to do anything like that. What was striking to me when I saw the tea-bag protest photos was the lack of emotional energy. In only one was the crowd actually energized, and there, the mood wasn't anger. They looked like they were having fun.

They don't look angry enough to secede. If they go, they'll realize pretty quickly that they made a mistake.
