Susan Boyle's next interview stops: Larry King and Oprah

Stephen Brook

Susan Boyle's instant worldwide fame continues to snowball, with 25m YouTube hits and rising for her Britain's Got Talent turn, and interview requests from Oprah Winfrey and Larry King.

Boyle is expected to appear on Larry King Live, the veteran interviewer's CNN show, and the queen of US daytime TV's programme, Oprah, after a week during which the internet has made the unemployed Scottish singer's rendition of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables on the ITV1 show last Saturday a worldwide phenonmenon.

King is due to interview Boyle on his programme tomorrow morning, UK time, while Winfrey has also agreed to interview the 47-year-old, adding to her round of US network TV breakfast show gigs with the likes of NBC and CBS earlier in the week. Interest from America shows no signs of abating. Boyle has already done 60 interviews with media outlets around the world.

Clips of Boyle's performance have been watched 25m times on YouTube, with a further 2.3m viewings on ITV's website.

Scottish newspaper the Daily Record also today uncovered a sultry version of Cry Me a River Boyle sang for a 1999 charity CD, part-funded by her local Whitburn Community Council, which has led to massive traffic on its site. Only 1,000 copies of the charity compilation CD were produced, according to the Daily Record, and it was recorded at Whitburn Academy at the behest of a local newspaper that launched a search for unsigned acts to take part.

I wasn't sure about posting this here but, judging by the acceptance of the other thread, I thought it might be ok seeing as Larry King Live is in 5 hours and a lot of people might want to know that she'll be on...

BTW, 20,615,257 views and counting on this one alone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY

Edit to add that there's an embedded link to Cry me a River and some lovely comments being made under the original Guardian story...

1. I hope some sane, honest, decent person is advising her as she
wades through this crap. I heard her and she brought me to tears. She has perfect pitch and the clear voice of an angel. But she really needs to be protected from the vultures.

off of. A sounding board, trusted council. It's like going zero to 120 in 3 seconds flat.

13. I have a feeling that Simon Cowell is actually looking out for her. I realize he's not everyone's
cup of tea, but he's pretty fierce.
And I think if he's on her side, she's got a good voice.
He knows the business and he's not gimmicky.

Hope so.

She's certainly taken the world by storm.
Bravo, Susan!

8. Beautiful. She knows how to sing a song.
That's more important than the quality of her voice. Some here have questioned if she's a "mimic." If so, I can listen to her all day. Great song.

7. You might want to think about the vehicle for that fame.
For money, true, some people got together to give the unprivileged and unconnected one chance to show extraordinary talent that has gone unused and unexploited.

"Cry Me a River" for charity and with no exploitation or publicity only sold one thousand copies. Same voice. And clearly some people knew it or they wouldn't have had her record it. But until this vehicle came along, she was unknown and unsought.

she has an incredible, haunting voice. I'm sitting here with goose bumps.

Who cares what she looks like? If she keeps singing, she's more beautiful than any size-0 model could ever hope to be.

She is a woman with unattractive looks, but an extremely rare voice. Beauty-wise, she is ugly. But talent and personality-wise, she is golden.

42. the "elephant in the room" is that you haven't posted your picture so we can see "perfect beauty"
I'll be waiting, as I want to know what I should strive to achieve. After all, looks are THE most important thing in life. I have never been an Internet message board away from perfection in this regard. Can you send me an autographed photo? I know you must be busier than hell with all your modeling contracts and TV appearances and interviews for "Perfection Embodied," but my canary's cage needs cleaning and it needs a new liner to shit on.

From the article:

By raising this Susan up, we will forgive ourselves for grinding every other Susan into the dust. It will be a very partial and poisoned redemption. Because Britain's Got Malice. Sing, Susan, sing - to an ugly crowd that doesn't deserve you.

25. Skin deep...
If Janis Joplin or Aretha Franklin were getting their start today, they wouldn't get far because the majority of Americans are very focused on the physical and rarely form opinions of any depth.

Ugly is only a matter of opinion. She looks okay to me. She doesn't look like a Barbie or a whore, and that's fine with me.

44. Yes! And Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, or even Judy Garland would have very little chance today...

...None of these big-voiced legendary ladies were "beautiful" by today's plastic-surgery induced standards. I can picture any of them today, walking in to an entry-level chorus call, and getting the dreaded "thank you" after barely getting through four bars of their audition song.

Sadly a big voice is no longer essential to make it on Broadway or in film, as now they can mike and even digitally pitch-correct today's weak, off-pitch (but "beautiful") um, "stars".

Thank God Susan Boyle hit in just the right way, at just the right moment to make us remember that REAL talent is worth something far more than that which is plastic "beautiful" and (and all too often these days) scandal-ridden.

41. what a shallow person you are. ugly, in fact, with no class whatsoever.
I know that before you were born you asked your "god" to make you perfect, Adonis-like, and now condemn Susan Boyle for not having your remarkable foresight, that extraordinary ability you had before birth to make sure you asked to conform to the superficial standards of "beauty" that your culture would have. Your special qualities give you the right to pass judgment on other people's looks, the configuration of genes and tissues that make a person unique.

Now go buy the latest copy of "Us" and "People" magazines so you can keep up with The Beautiful People--you know, the superficial ones who have nothing more important than their looks to think about. Also be sure to schedule that photo shoot to preserve forever your own magnificent, superior manifestation of the shallow end of the gene pool.

32. You definitely don't have to be gorgeous to be delightful.
Cheeky helps. As scared as she was, she stood right up to them. To me, the nervousness disappeared as soon as she began to sing. But how she kept her concentration with that audience whooping and hollering, I have no idea.

45. I don't think he was swallowing crow. He was realizing that he was witnessing something...

...legendary. History being made. The unknown nobody walks in from nowhere and knocks the socks off the whole world. The "42nd Street" or "A Star is Born" legend coming to life before his eyes.

I used to work in the theatre as a director and believe me, few ever get to see a moment like this. It is like glimpsing the holy grail. And what I saw in Morgan's eyes (and swallow) was that he KNEW he was witnessing the moment unfolding before his eyes.

It gave me goosebumps.
