I am in a staunch debate with a rightwinger! Can anyone send me a link (either pix or text) showing that bush also shook Chavez's hand? Thank you!

said he extended is hand to Bush. My guess is that Bush ignored the outstretched hand. The Venezuelan presidency says Obama initiated the handshake. It quoted Chavez as telling Obama he hopes for better relations between their nations. Chavez also said: "With this same hand I greeted Bush eight years ago. I want to be your friend."
