that she had been trying to get onto talent shows for years but was always rejected because of her image. She told a teacher who had given her some voice lessons that she was going to try one last time by trying to get on Britans Got Talent and that if they turned her away she was going to give up.

I heard this incredibly beautiful voice on the news radio station I listen to. At first I thought this was some TV thing like American Idol. I had no clue what it was, but it was so incredibly beautiful. Only after days of looking at Google News did I realize this was some special thing.

Amazing how she went in minutes or so from being an object of derision to being rather amusing & likeable to being jaw-droppingly talented, utterly in command of the audience. And at the end of it all most people have ended up feeling fiercely protective of her and powerfully admiring. What makes people stars is sometimes thought of as beauty or talent or some combination of the two but Susan Boyle shows us that there is something alchemical almost about the chemistry of personal appeal. We do know it happens but we never can quite answer how or why...hence comments like that 'really would she be such a big deal if she were young and beautiful' (which in itself is an ironic inversion of 'would she be thought of as as talented if she were old and plain'. What this reminds us is that we don't know all the elements necessary for stage appeal and that what we think we know about it is not always true and we are left to marvel as we recognize it in a single performance by an unlikely artist. Part of the deal is that we are all somewhat surprised by our own emotional response, a response that is very powerful and feels very good.
