11. Susan Boyle is a chubby, middle-aged rather ordinary looking woman

with a Scottish accent, very small-town manners, a tremendous, lovely voice, a pure heart and a good sense of humor. All of that adds up to a warm, spontaneous, unpretentious personality -- the perfect antidote for the overdose of corporate-sponsored, superficial, Barbydoll "singers" that the media usually markets to us.

Susan Boyle is a real person. She clearly loves singing and has a gift for performing songs in a way that speaks to your soul. On top of it all, she pretty much sings in tune and can even sing in tune when she sings a capella. She is refreshingly human. I don't think we are going to be reading about her divorce, her drug rehab or DUI convictions real soon. She is more likely to hang out in her local karaoke pub and her church choir loft than at Hollywood parties although she is likely to be going to a few of those Hollywood deals before long.

Most people like her -- a few self-absorbed cynics here on DU excepted of course.

I like her. My husband says that mostly older people like her -- not younger people. I'd like to know if young people like her too.

Eva Cassidy, however, died just as her star began its ascent. She died in 1996 from cancer.
