I'm 10 years older than Susan Boyle. But she recalls Mom; Mom was the first woman in the U.S. to win the War Production Board award in World War II, while working at Packard in Detroit. Eleanor Roosevelt flew in to present her with the award personally. Later, she married my wastrel Dad (long story) who left her to raise two sons in the 1950s alone with no child support, while working as a laundry person at a Detroit high school.
She retired in 1982 and went on to become a much-awarded, much-decorated doll maker. She was not well educated, but she was beloved by all who knew her, and she left us in 2003.
And I see echoes of Mom in the story of Susan Boyle, and all those who think it's such "fun" here on DU to denigrate this story should maybe rethink where they are coming from.
