Anyone have a kindle out there?
I was thinking of getting one to listen to during my morning and evening commute. If I get a newspaper subscription how does it flow? Can I simply have it read successive articles?

12. Because I have no interest in a bulky single-purpose device where someone else...
controls the content on it.

20. My books don't fit in my pocket either
Which is a good thing, if they did they'd be too small for me to read the text.

My only concern with these readers is that they're one more thing that will be designed to become obsolete as soon as the next generation comes out. Other than that, with as much as I read, I think it could be convenient.

16. The Sony is very thin
not bulky at all and you control the content. You put whatever reading material you want on it.

25. I've never seen one of those
The Wifi would be a nice feature though. I went Sony because I've had one before and it was around 100 dollars less.

26. It's very thin....
Also, it takes Mobipocket as well as Kindle. I've downloaded books from Munsey's, Bookyards, Mobipocket books as well as Amazon. I download tons of public domain books; they're free and there are thousands of them.

28. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about
The kindle is smaller then most books, saves trees, and you control what you put on it. What are you talking about??

Can I download all the stuff from Amazon and have it work the same way?

15. it
doesn't do voice reading and it doesn't have it's own wifi. Also it doesn't read Kindle books but that's no big deal since the Sony site has more choices. To get the books I use the Sony site as well as a couple of others. I think the Sony reads far more formats than the Kindle. I've used mine for school notes typed into word docs and pdf files.

For me the plus for the Kindle is it has WiFi so you can download books without a computer. The cost and wait, most of the time they are backordered, of the Kindle lead me to Sony. Also this is my second Sony, I had their first model a while back. They just do exactly what they are supposed to do. Sony has two models now, the more expensive one has a touch screen that could be very handy.

5. I don't know enough about the kindle to comment but a Blackberry with RSS reader works great.

Try Viigo. I can catch up on the news like a mutha while on the road.

Of course, you can't read books like you can with a kindle.

but the voice reader sounds too mechanical. For audiobooks or other audio info, I download to my iPod.

9. There must be a video with the voice reader.
I'll go find one and see if I can stand it.

All I know is that I am immensely bored of my radio selections in the morning. Its a pure waste of time for me.

21. If you have an mp3 player,
you can download newspapers and magazines from Audible.com. Actual human voices read the material to you, not the mechanical sound of voice software. Just plug it in your mp3 jack in the car, if you have one, or buy an adapter and plug it in the power outlet or cigarette lighter in the car. Works great.

I don't think I'd do well with the MP3 thing.

Otherwise that sounds like a great idea.

11. I _love_ my kindle, but..
It's a first gen kindle, so no text to speech.

(For those worried about DRM, it's been broken. So Amazon couldn't revoke the texts I have in any case.)

24. I love mine...
It has been great for travel and convenient. My wife and I read a lot, and someone gave us a Kindle as a present. We now have another one. It has reduced the large number of books lying around. Most books we read are cheaper than in paper. It may not be for everyone, but for us we've enjoyed the Kindles.

29. Yeah its not very good for listening to a book
It uses that "text to type" mechanical voice. If you were only going to use it for that, it is no where near worth the $350.

31. i am thinking of getting one, i wish it wasn't so expensive
i had concerns about whether it will feel different and not as comfortable as reading regular books. but most people who have it say it's very good and they don't feel they are missing out on anything.
