Scary stuff. If it's this easy then why does the gov need special access?

1. I smoke pot. Have for 30 years.
And for 30 years I have assumed someone is always listening in. Welcome to the club.

3. I don't like the idea
but just think: some poor bastard has to listen to me yak with my sister about my weiner dog and her cat. Or about my cute little nephews or the goodies we're going to send to the big nephew who's heading off to Afghanistan. Can you say boring?

8. Can you provide a synopsis of the vid, please? I'm on lame dial-up
and don't have the patience for it to dowload.

Thanks! :hi:

7. It's a software hack on the phone itself...
essentially taking advantage of a service feature called mobile twinning

Of course based on this thread I realize that 99.999% ( upped from 98% ) of DU'ers have no idea how telephony works- so we will just say somebody magically hacked the big black box

Who are these lamb-like innocents who walk around in the early 21st century not simply assuming that they are under constant surveillance by the state apparatus?!? Who are the sheltered liberals who believe that the CIA started torturing people at the very recent behest of Dick Cheney?

I'm always stunned by the wide-eyed innocence of people who didn't know that the US was a brutal world power and virtual police state, much of our own making. Like it just started happening when George W. Bush took office! Who are these imbeciles? I kinda wanna live in their ignorant bubble.

14. I have assumed my phone is listened to since the 60s.
I may be wrong most of the time, but there is no doubt that the government will listen if it wants to.
You have no privacy on the internet either.

15. I'm at work so I can't watch the video
-- actually I could, but the computer here has no sound card so it's pointless.

Back in 1969 and 70 I became convinced that my phone was being tapped, because of the odd noises and loss of sound quality that would often occur, especially when I was on the phone with one particular friend. At the time I led about the most innocent and law-abiding life a person could possibly lead, and so we both found it hilarious that anyone would want to tap my phone. I've long considered filing an FOIA request to see what, if anything, the FBI has on me. But it seems like a lot of work and expense when there's probably nothing there.

On the other hand, because of my recent political activism in recent years, of which posting on DU is the least of what I do, I keep saying that as long as I can get on airplanes Homeland Security isn't very efficient.

Oh, and for agent Steve, or whoever is reading this stuff, I have never and would never advocate harming the President of the United States, no matter who is the office holder.

19. This is why...
...so many companies are developing software\hardware that encrypts cell phone calls.

I suspect that the usage of such technology will become commonplace...my Sherpa and I only use encrypted phones these days.

20. It's be a waste of time for someone to try that with my cellphone!
First off, I've got the cheapest cellphone Tracfone gives away with the fewest features. And 99% of the time it is in my purse, in a drawer in the hallway, turned off or with a totally depleted battery.

Other than working with the Obama campaign last year, I do absolutely nothing with my cell that would be interesting to anyone. I might call my SO to hook up for shopping or dinner - that is about it.

In the late 70s, early 80s, when we owned a head shop, we were told that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement was following us. Our other business was a horse farm, so we concentrated on that for the next six months. Drove all over the state of Florida, going to horse farms, shows, tack and feed shops, and being the image of a conventional family with horses and a farm.

We were easy as hell to follow - a big brown truck with a big brown horse trailer is not going to make funky moves to shake a tail. FDLE probably used a lot of man hours and a chunk of their budget following us around. Eventually we got the word they had given up on getting anything on us and stopped following us.

22. If they really were following you,
if they really were tapping my phone (see my post above) then we are just the tip of the iceberg, and the feds have been wasting an incredible number of man hours over the years keeping track of people like us. No wonder the warnings of 9/11 were too little and more or less too late.

Yes, I know about the August memo that was ignored, but it was probably buried amidst reports of following horse trailers and listening to a couple of young women discussing hair and make-up.
