I am so sick of my conservative mother
and her fox brainwashed attitude! All I ever hear is about how horrible liberals are - they want your daughters to have sex at a young age, they WANT you to abort your babies and the newest: they want mandatory milatary service. She says so much with so much hate (especially for a born-again Christain), not realizing that her daughters are those very people that she despises!

I'm just so sick of it!!!!

1. Telll her just that.
And tell her that who ever is telling her those ideas is a (do not paraphrase) "rat-fucking liar".

but it falls on deaf ears.
So, totally brainwashed. It's sad.

I really suspect that conservatives have a different DNA or something, since logic doesn't seem to sink in for those types.

4. agreed
I have a few people that I have had to tell, "Let's NOT discuss politics and/or religion ok?".

If the person wants to still remain friends, they tend to back-off of the subject sometimes if you are fortunate.

13. And if that doesn't work, try sticking your fingers in your ears and singing

"The Times They Are A'Changing" or something similar. :-)

8. She's 76, so no changing her...
I'm going to ask her to refrain from her remarks b/c they're hurtful. She'll come out with a any liberal bashing remark at ANY moment.
When I challenge her latest remarks - she simply tells me that she doesn't want to talk politics. Okay, then keep your remarks to yourself!

10. I get that a lot
I'm in Oklahoma so there are a lot of angst-ridden wingnuts greiving and licking their wounds here. When they start in, I'l give them an "oh really?" and then proceed with some facts to the contrary. That's when I get the "I don't want to talk politics". Then you should have kept your damn mouth shut! :grr:

16. She sounds like a bully...
...who thinks it's okay to bang other people over the head with her brainwashed version of reality -- but will not allow them to respond.

Family dynamics can be hard. But I would never advocate for letting someone get away with that -- making a nasty remark, and then when called on it, trying to change the subject. Nope. Either politics is an allowed topic -- in which case, you get your say too -- or it is not, in which case she needs to STFU.

Well you don't have to swear. But I'd make it clear that those are the ground rules. You're her daughter, not her doormat. Probably best to avoid the topic altogether -- but make it clear that if she doesn't, you won't either. That's my advice, FWIW.

6. I'm sorry
If it's any consolation there are some of us here at DU who have conservative spouses, for whatever reason (e.g. we saw the light and came around, and they didn't, usually).

We feel your pain.

7. My mother is like that too.
It's really hard to deal. So I told her that since the Pukes want to give my social security to Wall Street I'm looking into retirement in Mexico, so she shouldn't count on me being around if she lives to be as old as her mother. And that if she doesn't like it she has only herself to blame for proudly voting Republican. I'm going down there next month, and will be sure to send her a postcard to make my point.

14. Don't forget, you probably didn't
raise yourself.

In return, we just deal with it.
