Teacher sends boy, 5, home with bag of poo
Source: KOMO News

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A 5-year-old student at Apple Valley Elementary in Yakima headed home on the bus with more than books in his backpack. Inside was a smelly package his father never imagined he'd be toting around.

"I'm still kind of in shock over this, because why would somebody do this? It's disgusting!" said the boy's father, who wished to be identified only as "Jason."

Jason says his son's kindergarten teacher had bagged up a piece of human feces and stuck it in his son's backpack. His wife found the stinky mess.

"She found a clear plastic bag with a piece of fecal matter wrapped up in a brown paper towel with the note on it," he said.

The note read, "This little turd was on the floor in my room."

What a cruel, embarrassing and humiliating thing to do to a kid. He'll be stuck with that memory for the rest of his life.

And it seems like there has to be some kind of health code violation in there someplace; exactly how did the teacher go about determining the source of the aforementioned fecal matter?

7. Good grief. As an educator myself, let me say there are plenty of steps available. This is just
inexcusable.

The first step is to speak directly with the parents. If the child has bathroom issues, there are all kinds of things that can be done. Hell, he can have a classroom teacher's aide who comes to assist him in the bathroom at pre-set times. Also, there may be a physical reason the child is having issues. In California, a 504 can be drawn up to provide the child with the needed assistance.

This woman needs to leave Kindergarten. She is clearly getting burned out and should not be with little children. In fact, something this dramatic leads me to think it is time to retire. If she is an otherwise decent educator, perhaps she should work in a capactiy that does not involve children.

This is just shameful. Shameful. People like this bring shame to our professions.

19. While children are suppose to be potty trained prior to attending Kinder, accidents happen.
As an educator, I would look at a child with toileting problems and think that there is likely a more severe issue. Sometimes toileting issues can indicate sexual abuse, but more likely, the child is severely stressed or suffering from severe anxiety, such as a bully on the playground, or, there may be a more physical issue. Is the child suffering from incontinence? Is it something else?

The teacher should have gone to both the parents and the principal with the problem and found kind and loving ways to assist the child versus the ridiculous stunt she pulled. She has only made the situation worse, and for absolutely no reason.

If she had taken the correct steps and the parents refused to work with her, the principal and the district would have taken over the situation and she wouldn't have had to deal with it. She has made herself the center of attention, and not the child's problem.

I can't help but think that if this is how she handles all issues in the classroom all the children must be stressed. That cannot help a child to learn anything.

62. My son developed Encopresis about half way
through Kindergarten - something I fear is related to either not being able to use the bathroom when needed or just embarrassment of doing number 2 at school. We have him on a mild laxative (from his doctor) and it's helping but there is something to how many times they are "allowed" to use the bathroom.

20. The teachers actions are now overshadowing anything the kid did
She should be terminated if not worse.

There are limits to what punishment can be meted out on a 5 year old --this is well beyond anything that is appropriate and probably beyond what is legal.

I no longer care what the kid did, the greater problem now is how the teacher responded --it makes her unfit to hold that position.

You said:

"She should be terminated if not worse."

What would the "worse" part be? Do you think criminal charges should be filed? Additionally, it is doubtful she can be fired until after her case is presented to the teacher's union, so the teacher will probably be around until at least the end of the school year.

If this child has a problem then the parents need to see a doctor, and if needs be draft a 504 plan with the school.

Problem is some kids even at 5 are not fully toilet trained. Lots are but some aren't.

66. Jason is a douchebag. What kind of fucknugget of a parent doesn't know whether his kid shit himself?
"Jason says his son's teacher, Mrs. Graham, called last Friday and said her classroom was "stinky." She asked if the boy could have had an accident.

Jason acknowledged the possibility, as his son had had a couple of accidents in the classroom in the past. He told Mrs. Graham there were extra clothes in his backpack.

Jason never imagined the teacher would send his son home with evidence of his accident."

So either Jason didn't know or he was being cagey while a teacher was trying to discuss a problem concerning his son and only "acknowledging the possibility". Thus the reality check

Accidents happen. It serves no purpose to ridicule and humiliate the child.

Well, it serves no good purpose. Obviously the teacher had a need that could only be fulfilled by hurting the child. Such a teacher needs to be removed from the classroom.

55. I suppose that's part of the reason that I quit logging in volunteer
hours after 70 when mine were in elementary school. I helped out with the kids who needed more to learn to read, helped the teachers in the classroom, helped the librarian, helped with grading papers, and even held the heads of kids while they were sick and puking into the toilet.

Kindergartners may have their 'schedules' different than what they were used to, trying to adjust, or becoming ill, but what this teacher did is unacceptable.

56. Depends on the classroom.
Kindergarteners do have accidents. They are only five. It happens.

Also, in Special Education, children are often still in diapers. They wear Depends because they don't have control over their boldily functions. The teacher's aids and the teacher change diapers and clean up, and this is for preschoolers all the way up to high schoolers. And, as many special needs people are educated until age 22, there are diaper changes for them, too, if necessary.

So, a Kindergarten teacher, of which I once was, should expect some toileting accidents. I had my fair share. I had a nervous girl wet her pants in the third grade once. It happens. But humiliation isn't going to work. A caring and loving approach is the only solution.

27. Here's another source
-----

The teacher has not been suspended, and more information about any disciplinary actions will be made public Thursday, he said.

Morrow said there was nothing indicating that it was his son’s feces that the teacher found on the floor, and he’s not sure his son even knew his teacher had put it in his backpack, he said.

“He was in a good mood when he got home,” he said.

Morrow admits that he has twice gone to the school in the past to help his son clean after going to the bathroom, but that he never had an accident in class.

On Friday, Morrow said he received a call from the teacher informing him that her class stunk, and asked if his son may have had an accident.

I don't live all that far from Yakima, maybe we should form a posse and burn the witch?

The student could also have taken pants down and pooped on the floor.

The teacher did not handle this properly or exhibit any sense, but teachers can get very stressed too. Maybe she was one of the teachers recently told because of state budget cuts there will no longer be a job next year. There are a lot of teachers breaking down and crying this year already because the loss of jobs and abhorrent funding means teachers are going to be made workless and even for some homeless soon.

Let's get a grip, KOMO will see her metaphorically "hanged" here. I won't participate though. The crimes against children in schools are daily and so common most people no longer even recognize them. Life is full of indignities and mistakes.

30. Sorry, she had no business teaching kindergarten if this is her response to an
accident.

I subbed pretty regularly in a kindergarten class in a very rough school. (These kids were expert at talking to each other without moving their lips at five years old).

There was a bathroom problem with one child (whle we were not sure who it was, we had a pretty good idea) who would go into the bathroom and smear feces on the floor and the wall. It was clear that this was an act of anger and vandalism.

We took care of the problem by inspecting the bathroom before and after every child went in and came out.

I know that if any child had been caught, the parents would have been called in for a conference to utilize the best way of handling the problem and of find of what was causing the child to act out in such a way.

I can promise you, there were no bags of poo sent home to the parents, via the students or otherwise.

that has to be the most innapropriate way one can think of to deal with this situation.

When my son was in 1st grade, he asked repeatedly to go to the bathroom to urinate. He was denied, and the inevitable happened. He was humiliated, and I was pissed. I went to the school, had the principal bring the teacher into his office and we had it out. She was wrong, he had asked for a full 40+ minutes, and she "thought" he was "joking". Needless to say, the problem never arose again.

I'm dead serious. That child will never forget that incident. I hope she's fired. I have friends who are teachers, and my best friend is an excellent teacher who was laid off in California a couple weeks ago, which is a damn shame since we need more teachers like her. They would never do something so horrible. My daughter wet her pants in the 1st grade and was devastated. Her grandmother had made her a one piece jumpsuit with the buttons too big and she could not get it off in time. The teacher was kind and found her some clothes to wear, put her jumpsuit in a plastic bag and no mention was made of the incident after my daughter initially let me know what had happened, and she has since forgotten about it.

Not the right thing to do, for sure, but facts do matter. Kid may have some other scars which contribute to his problem. I would really like to have more info.

34. Funny story. Kindergarten teacher at the school where I ...
...was teaching came back to the room to find that a student had took a dump, not on the floor, but on top of the desk, in front of the rest of the class. Luckily she had the snap to go next door, get the teacher to watch her class, because she told her she had to go home, otherwise, she would probably kill the kid. So, things were taken care of. This was a long going thing with the kid. He also told her, in minute detail, how his Dad and Mom would shoot up heroin, down to the tourniquet.

That's my strange war story.

43. When I taught 1st grade we had bathrooms at the back of the classroom
and the coat racks were next to the bathroom. I had a kid go back to the bathroom one morning and pull the coats into the bathroom and pee all over them.

Called his mom who came up to school and took those coats home and washed and dried them before the end of the day. And her son was suspended.

There are usually bathroom 'issues' with this age group.

But sending a turd home in a baggie is a bit extreme.

37. This is just a bag-a-telle for punishment.
Teachers are really good for this. Taping up little kids with duct tape, or taping them inside cardboard boxes. Calling them names in class. Allowing bullies to beat them bloody. Comparatively, this is nothing. This woman will probably be the NEA Educator of the Year.

67. how did a little kid manage to crap on her floor without her seeing him?
A lot isn't clear here. Did he poop on the floor on in his pants. There was reference to a change of clothes. Did he poop in his pants and when he changed it fell on the floor? If the teacher knew he had an accident, gave him clothes and then got upset because a five year old didn't pick up his own poop -- well, I wouldn't want her interacting with my kids.
