Enough with the Texas succession crap. Kay Bailey Hutchinson is gaining on Perry, so he felt
he has to do and say something to let people know "I am a man! See how I'm standing up against the government! I have BALLS! BALLS the size of a car!"

He has to win the hard right fundie vote in the republican primary and he has to get them to turn out in high numbers. Hutchinson will attract people to the primary who want Perry gone and see her as a more acceptable republican. He wants to align her with the federal government so he can run against Barack Obama instead of her.

It has nothing to do with succession, it has to do with votes.

1. So that explains it!
That whole secession thing sounded pretty goofy even for Gov. Goodhair. Mahalo (thank you).

I have BALLS! BALLS the size of a car!

A Matchbox car, maybe. Maybe. :P

2. That's what we've been saying, but there are some that refuse to listen
The poll numbers already show Hutchinson winning easily in a primary against Perry. Plus, since she got in early enough, I'm willing to bet that the big GOP donors are lining up behind her as well.

3. It's going to be an interesting campaign

Perry is going to go hard right to try to hold her off.

I've been amazed at how many here take such a simplistic view of what he said.

14. If you concentrate on Perry and his statement and WHY he said it
It shouldn't be locked.

But then as someone from Texas, I tried multiple times to explain the motivating of Perry, that he's headed to a losing primary with KBH, to no avail. It's NOT about secession, it's about the governor's race.

What's not acceptable is broad brush attacks on states and regions, which unfortunately most of the secession threads have turned into.

37. Ditto with him refusing the federal stim unemployment money
One word sums it up: Primaries.
The primaries may be 11 months away for **us**, but they are happening right NOW for Perry.

The whole Perry thing has some very deep issues going on..if one chooses to explore/research them.

Background for non-Texans:
Now he is threatening to call special sessions all summer long to keep the TX lawmakers in Austin..revenge for them wanting the stim money and fighting with him over it all. They all but emptied his gov office coffers and last I read, a TX repub said "stay tuned" when asked if they plan on giving the money back. The taking of the funds would hit in September... IMO, the longer he keeps them in session, the less likely he is to get his office funding in the Fall.

8. Perry screwed up big time with this
75% of Texans disagree with him, he's now an embarrassment on the national stage, and his crazy succession rant actually makes Kay Bailey Hutchinson look like the reasonable, smart choice.

Goddess help us all if our choice this time is between Kinky and either Perry or Hutchinson. :puke:

26. I've not seen any polls out-- the primary election's still 11 months away. But...
based on my observations (from Houston--so not nutball central), there's an interesting "bullshit ceiling" among Texans for how much nutty right wing pandering they're willing to put up with. My guess is that Perry's plenty safe unless people start directing their general, ambient conservative turboanger at him being in office for 10 years already.

Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 07:11 AM by tammywammy
Maybe it was last week or the week before. I'll see if I can hunt it down.

edited to add:

All right, I found an article, it's from Feb 25, so just a tad older than I thought. I'd expect her to have pushed further ahead after his stupid secession talk.

Poll: Hutchison leads Perry among likely GOP voters

Voters won’t get their say for more than a year, but a new poll suggests that a majority of Republicans would like to see Gov. Rick Perry retire.

U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who has said she plans to run for governor in 2010, leads Perry 56 percent to 31 percent among likely Republican voters, according to a poll released Tuesday by Raleigh, N.C.-based Public Policy Polling.

The firm, which uses automated polling, surveyed 797 likely Republican primary voters Feb. 18-20. The survey’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percent.

Hutchison was viewed favorably by 76 percent of those polled, while Perry was viewed favorably by 60 percent. Hutchison also has a 16-point lead among the 47 percent of respondents who like both candidates.

36. Should be interesting..she's pro-choice and doesn't want Roe overturned
Safe to say every other word out of Gov Goodhair's mouth leading up to the primary will be "Roe".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kay_Bailey_Hutchison#Abortion_positions

Hutchison is against outlawing abortion.<7> She also believes that the decision of the United States Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade was appropriate and secures a constitutional right, and that it should not be overturned.<8>

She has served on the Advisory Board of The Wish List (Women in the Senate and House) a Political Action Committee, which contributes to pro-choice female Republican candidates for Congress, she is no longer on the board <14> and the PAC did not endorse her in 2006. <15>. In the past years NARAL has given her ratings of 0%, 7%, 20%, and 0%, indicating that her voting record mostly favored enacting proposed abortion restrictions. <16>

While in the Texas House of Representatives (1973 to 1977), Hutchison worked, along with Sarah Weddington (the attorney who won the Roe v. Wade case), to protect rape victims from having their names published. She supports some abortion rights, but does not believe taxpayers should fund abortions. Hutchison has also endorsed parental notification laws <17> and in 2006 sponsored legislation to prevent minors from legally being transported across state lines to circumvent such laws.

30. I think most, but obviously not all, have had it with Perry
& his secession talk didn't win him any friends outside the foaming-at-the-mouth nutjobs & maybe some libertarians.

I think KBH will come out on top (dammit) because she'll be seen as the more sane GOP candidate & the one least likely to have her budget zeroed out for saying stupid things. ;)
