Why Do Conservatives Like Stephen Colbert?

Colbert has built a career mocking the right-wing. So why does new research suggest that the comedian is popular with Conservatives?

So ... Stephen Colbert doesn't really mean all those wacky liberal-bashing things he says, does he? Comedy Central's The Colbert Report is obviously a parody of a wing-nut right-wing talk show. Right?

Or ... is it? (Cut to devilishly quizzical chin-grabbing stare.)

He can't be serious.

Or ... can he sort of be? (Cut to screeching bald eagle.)

Well, apparently Colbert is just that good. His character is so pitch-perfectly ambiguous that, according to a new study, what it is you see in him is whatever it is you want to see in him. If you are liberal, he is a liberal, too. If you are a conservative, he is a conservative, just like you.

And if you are a bear, well, good luck.

This is a fascinating article that gets it 100% wrong!

As a few people note in the comments section.. The reason some conservatives are Colbert fans is because Conservatives don't "get" satire.

I wonder if the author isn't a conservative himself who is desperate to snatch some of that Colbert Nation glory?

2.  Newsflash: a lot of liberals don't get satire either.
If I recall correctly, some people on this very site were appalled by The Colbert Report until the premise was explained to them. Conservatives don't have a monopoly on stupidity, as I'm sure you've noticed. There are some pretty thick lefties, too. But at least our hearts are in the right place.

4. i don't remember what you describe as happening on here
there might have been some people who had issues with him agreeing to appear at that press dinner thing but that was mostly because they ddin't think he would actually do what he did.

3. well, since the press dinner or whatever that was that they invited colbert to headline....
i tend to think that there were some who might have actually thought he was on their side or something. and they got slammed, right in their face for it. so at least some folks might see that they may have been mistaken about what colbert is doing. i'm going to guess they won't invite him back.

5. Colbert eviscerated the press at that dinner for the White House correspondents
In a segment on NPR's On the Media, they noted that the crowd was really stunned and not laughing at anything. It's amazing that they did not realize that they were a bunch of assimilated neocon toadies.

My favorite NPR show: http://www.onthemedia.org/

6. That dinner was one of the great (and one of the few bright) moments
in the dark days of the Bush Administration.

I'll never forget turning on C-SPAN to see what he would say...and my jaw dropping as he socked it to the Harper Valley PTA, so to speak. And the Harper Valley PTA sat there in stunned silence.

And then came all the damage control afterward..."They didn't laugh because he wasn't funny"..."He insulted the people who invited him and that's unacceptable"..."Next year they're going to have Rich Little..."

Priceless.

8. i give it to colbert...it's one thing to say stuff about people on your own show
and your own set.... but to go to THEM and say stuff to their faces.... oh man does that take balls. and they deserved every bit of it. and they knew it. and THAT'S why they weren't laughing. they knew it was them he was talking about. LOL!

btw... their damage control.... if it wasn't funny, it was because they knew it was true. and they deserved every bit of what they got. and i'm glad he did it, too.

11. I wish he was my dad
He is so likeable. I remember when he wrote his young daughter into segments on the Daily Show.

12. The Parallel Universe Defined
One common theme for my way too many years here on DU have been how the rushpublicans lie and get away with it. It's because they've guilt their own bubble...the parallel universe. It's where Ozzie & Harriet still dominate...Rambo settles all disputes and anyone who doesn't believe or agree must be some kind of communist or subversive. It's nearly hemetically sealed with hate radio and Faux noise make it possible to live in this bubble and never have to deal with reality or hold their own accountable. It allows one to revise history, distort facts or outright lie to square things and always make the "conservative" right.

It's always been fun to watch the right wing try to figure Colbert out...and the fact that he's been doing this for nearly 4 years and they still haven't a clue makes this so much more entertaining.

13. Well, they liked the Bush/Cheney, and actually believed it was a "conservative" admin. So...
No surprise that they can't comprehend Colbert's parody.

14. Faux "News" is a parody of real news, so how can they tell the difference
Seriously, they have been conditioned by Faux "News" to believe what sounds good to them, no matter how absurd the play acting of the anchor, no wonder they can't tell the difference between real and fake any more.
