some good news for teenage girls

FDA to allow 17-year-olds to get 'morning-after' birth control over the counter

Women's groups cheered the government's decision to allow 17-year-olds to buy the "morning-after" emergency contraceptive without a doctor's prescription, but conservatives denounced it as a blow to parental supervision of teens.

The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it would accept, not appeal, a federal judge's order that lifts Bush administration restrictions limiting over-the-counter sales of "Plan B" to women 18 and older. U.S. District Judge Edward Korman ruled last month in a lawsuit filed in New York that President George W. Bush's appointees let politics, not science, drive their decision to restrict over-the-counter access.

Women's groups said the FDA's action was long overdue, since the agency's own medical reviewers had initially recommended that the contraceptive be made available without any age restrictions.

Korman ordered the FDA to let 17-year-olds get the birth control pills. He also directed the agency to evaluate clinical data to determine whether all age restrictions should be lifted.

1. Mika was saying "I don't know how I feel about that...aren't they still children at 17?"
when she read the headline about this story.

I don't even want to THINK about what it must be like to be one of Mika's daughters (she has two I believe)...

3. Mika's not like her "on-air" persona
She's just playing her "role" on tv..

She's eye-candy for the 40/50-something guys in tv-land

It's her job to play the dumb-blonde "gal-Friday" to He-Man Joey..

She does it for the M O N E Y ...

5. As a mom to a 17 yr. old daughter...
I am grateful she has this choice, but I sure as hell hope she doesn't bypass the parental help she will need to get through a scare like that. She has been dragged to the gyno once already for problems she was having and I encouraged her to go on the pill, but she's refused so far and AFAIK she isn't active (yet). I just don't want anything to keep her from her goals and dreams but at the same time don't want her to go through tough shit on her own. She's 17 but in my mind she's still just a girl who needs a mom.
