Rice, Cheney Approved Waterboarding

04/23/09 01:05 PM

The Associated Press reports that the highest Bush administration officials signed off on waterboarding:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice verbally OK'd the CIA's request to subject alleged al-Qaida terrorist Abu Zubaydah to waterboarding in July 2002, a decision memorialized a few days later in a secret memo that the Obama administration declassified last week.

Rice's role was detailed in a narrative released Wednesday by the Senate Intelligence Committee. It provides the most detailed timeline yet for how the CIA's harsh interrogation program was conceived and approved at the highest levels in the Bush White House.

The new timeline shows that Rice played a greater role than she admitted last fall in written testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee.

4. If she was she should have written her own "letter of rejection"
and then immediately resigned her post.

5. The more that is declassified, the more people can come forward and talk truth.
How many people are waiting for the moment to speak?

6. Their silence at the time makes them complicit.
Many of us spoke out back when it first broke. At the time I was the owner of a clothing shop in a well located (very visible) art district. I draped my mannequins in black fabric in the position that was made famous with the electrotrodes attached. My husband had 2 postrs made by a friend who was a graphic designer, one with flag draped coffins with the John Kerry quote, "How can you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?" and the other of an elderly Iraqi man holding a dead Iraqi child with her legs blown away with the text "War of Choice?" There were also signs NOT IN OUR NAME and TORTURE IS UNAMERICAN.

We had no special protection, but were so appalled we had to speak out at the time. Those who remained silent, imho, are complicit. The evidence was there . Their choice to ignore it, I hope haunts their souls.
