Sure, torture can make someone talk. In fact, they'll talk whether they know anything or not. And they ones who do know something are more likely to give false info than correct info. Look at McCain - he said the VC "broke" him, and yet he still gave false info.

So, how many red herrings did the CIA have to run down? And how much did it interfere with chasing down legitimate leads?

1. Damn Straight!
Let's encourage Cheney to pull those files too while he looks for the ones that supposedly cover his ass.

2. Right! I'm not buying this "torture works" crap.
It's immoral and wrong even if it did work, but it doesn't. 99% of the info you are going to get will be false, and it's a waste of time trying to find that 1% when there are better ways to do it.

3. Excellent Point - Valuable Time & Money Was Spent Both Torturing And Then......
following up on dead leads as a result. It would be interesting to see the contrast between useful intelligence vs false intelligence as a result of the torture.

4. The methods used were developed to elicit false confessions -- for propaganda purposes.
They descended from methods used on captured U.S. military personnel during the Korean War. They were by the Bushistas used to try to elicit propaganda to support the Invasion of Iraq. So, we need to consider the concept of useful false intelligence -- the crime of using criminal methods in with criminal intent to support a criminal act.
