With time running short in this year's regular session, the Legislature's Republican majority has sucker-punched Floridians with a last-minute plan that would throw new obstacles in the path of citizens registering to vote, casting their ballots and amending the state constitution.
The voting plan's partisan motivations are transparent. It follows steady gains in registration for Democrats in Florida and Barack Obama's victory. Mr. Obama no doubt benefited from vigorous efforts to register voters and get them to the polls in Florida.
You might think lawmakers would regard surges in registration and turnout as good things. But in Florida's Legislature, the majority sees them as a problem. As an excuse, they warn of widespread voter fraud -- a phantom that has yet to appear.
Rep. Chris Dorworth, a Lake Mary Republican who has his eye on the House speaker's post in 2014, is among those leading the charge. If shamelessly pushing a partisan agenda and trying to stifle citizen activism are qualifications for speaker, he's a shoo-in.
