Right wing stirring the swine flu shitpot?
Anyone else get the feeling that the building hysteria on swine flu will be driven from the right, and that it's a willing attempt to foment fear and instability in the economy for political gains?

Watch Drudge et al. to see this one "develop" in real time. These people are avarice personified.

2. Just checked out the Sludge Report...
You're right...

There's about a dozen swine-flu related headlines there, and the big one is "MEXICO CITY CANCELS ALL PUBLIC EVENTS".

6. Mexico actually did cancel all public events
I think they were even having a soccer game and they won't let any fans come to the stadium. It's farely standard for outbreaks.

But I do agree the Right wing is trying to cause mass hysteria.

9. But they did cancel public events
and closed museums, and other public places

And enacted a disaster plan...

21. Yeah, I'm not saying the story's not true...
I'm just saying the right-wing's using it to stir up hysteria.

10. I am quite serious. People in border towns will become even more
ugly than before. Remember, it doesn't take much to turn people against one another in this country. If people think they might be in the company of a brown person who may possibly be carrying a highly contagious and deadly disease, we may see some of the same ignorance we saw in the 80's.

we now have two more clusters, one in Kansas and the other in NYC

That potential will go away soon

13. You're right....lets not take tried and true steps to stop an outbreak
Its better if it kills 5-7% of the worlds population in the name of not offending anyone.

17. I'm sorry, but I don't know what the hell you're talking about, and I suspect...
neither do you. Nowhere in my post did I say that we shouldn't take the needed steps to quell this pandemic, but I've lived long enough to know the peculiarities of human nature. I lived through the ugliness, when AIDS first made national news, and I know that when people become panicked, they can be quite unreasonable & discriminatory, even if they're "good" people.

32. Its a newsflash that the idiots at freerepublic are idiots?
Come on, they can politicize whatever they want. They are a small and increasingly marginalized segment of society. That doesn't mean if we had known about this sooner that we SHOULD have shut down borders in order to contain the disease if possible.

33. I am not disagreeing with your larger point, but take another look at the o.p.
I think my original post was in keeping with the topic at hand. Sorry, Joe, I think we're in the same place on this, but having worked in the healthcare field for the past 31 years, I know from whence I speak. Panic can make the most sane people act in the most insane ways.

30. Well at least we are prepared. The republiCons were good enough to build concentration camps for
quarantining the sick masses. Or interment camps, or maybe a new name...."wellness camps". You heard it here first.
