Woman shot dead during US house raid in Iraq(AFP)

26 April 2009

KUT, Iraq - A woman and a policeman were shot dead during a US raid on a house in the southern Iraqi town of Kut early on Sunday, according to an Iraqi security official and a local medic.

The Iraqi official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said US forces arrested five people in the raid, including a police captain and a tribal leader, all from the same family.

A medic at a nearby hospital said it had received the body of a woman who had been shot in the stomach and the shoulder and a man who had been shot in the head.

A US military spokesman confirmed that a woman was killed during the raid, saying “she was in the area during the engagement with a suspect, moved into the line of fire, and was struck by gunfire.”

1. She might have been deaf.
Seriously. I was in a shoot out once (not participating, just wandered in cluelessly) and while most of us on the boulevard were cowering quite appropriately in an effort to avoid the gunfire, this blithe old lady wandered down the street, clueless. I risked life and limb to grab her and throw her in a ditch. For my trouble she beat me on the head with her cane. I finally was able to apprise her of the situation and all I got was a "Hmmmph!" as though I'd spoiled her walk or something.

It's not uncommon for family units to be multi-generational. Without more information, we don't know if this was an old lady who was unaware of the situation, or someone younger with a different agenda. Sounds like the police captain was playing more than one side of the fence, though.

8. That was nothing more than gratuitous snark on your part. It made no sense, either
Bet it made you feel superior for a brief and shining moment, too.

I know the region. I know that there's often an old deaf or blind (macular degeneration is common in that part of the world) granny living in the house. They don't dump grandma at the nursing home like westerners do. They keep her at home, even if all she can do is make the tea and pee on the floor every now and again.

But hey, now you feel cool, because you got to make a halfassed little remark that obliquely and falsely suggests that I'm without compassion or I'm happy about what transpired.

Whoopeee for you--you're just so "hip."

9. Sure sounds that way, dunnit? Like David Carradine's Kwai Chung Caine in Kung Fu...
Only far less profound.

Snatch the pebbles from my hand....

11. Or is the Pebbles snatching the club from Bam-Bam, like in Bedrock?
And clubbing the grasshopper to death with it?

With Dino looking on benevolently, and Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty giggling at their lighthearted antics?
