Scientists Create Fluorescent Puppy
A cloned beagle named Ruppy – short for Ruby Puppy – is the world's first transgenic dog. She and four other beagles all produce a fluorescent protein that glows red under ultraviolet light.

1. Seems to have little scientific value...
...and huge costs involved. Stupid.

4. The point made in the article was that it is an advance
in transgenic cloning of larger animals that in the future can be used for genetic modeling of various human and animal diseases.

They'd already cloned fluorescent mice.

I just hope these little guys are allowed to be social animals like dogs are supposed to be.

I can see a distinct advantage, you wouldn't trip over them in a 60s crash pad lit by black light.

13. Try reading, it's the latest fad...
"Dogs already serve as models for diseases such as narcolepsy, certain cancers and blindness."

22. It is an effort to balance things out.
Since the dogs weren't fluorescent they had an advantage over the cats, this is a glowing example of "balancing the playing field".

17. This is an easy method of being certain you have inserted a particular genetic sequence
If the puppy glows then you did the genetic sequencing correctly.

It would be nice to know when curing a disease via genetic methods that you could correctly insert a particular genetic sequence.

20. Heh - the middle puppy seems to be trying to keep the
puppy on the right from attacking the assholes who made them a freak show.

I, too, hope they're allowed to be pets. They're cute.
