5. i can imagine Obama on the phone asking wtf happened!
I can hear the excuses now "Well, Mr. President, we didn't want people to get upset so we thought we'd better not say anything." As our president puts his face in his hands...

4. They did a low altitude "photo op" with two AF fighter jets and The Plane That Becomes AF 1 over NYC
It scared the bejeezus out of Lower Manhattan and saw whole buildings evacuated.

They never told anyone they intended to do this.

9. Even if they had announced it, would it have been that much smarter?
Who thought it would be a good publicity photo to show a 747 over NYC? Guess next they'll fly WW II bombers over Nagasaki to promote American-Japanese relations.

12. The fact is a 747 flew really low and scared the shit out of people
The air force fucked up, and some people ought to get in trouble for it.

The OP says that the person who decided to keep it secret was the dumbfuck.

No one else.

15. The notification is definitely a problem, but I think the act was pretty stupid too
They could have just CGIed it and not scared anybody.

17. If there had been advance notice, 1000s of folks would have been there with cameras...
It's cool seeing the presidential plane.

It used to do touch and go's out of the Norfolk Navy Base.

21. The Air Force
is calling it an "aerial photo mission", that's different than the "photo-op" the media is calling it.

To me, aerial photo mission, means they weren't taking photos of the planes, they were taking them of the city.

To be honest, I don't believe any of those explanations. I think it was something else entirely, I think there's a whole lot more to this story.

I agree it was a pretty stupid thing to do.

and it wouldn't explain not notifying everyone.

Very little of the story makes sense to me.

22. It was a stupid thing to do
But if they announced it maybe someone with a rocket launcher would have taken it out. But they never should have done it to begin with.

24. News: President to visit
Loony person with rocket launcher decides to greet the flight

Seems to me there is no more or less greater security threat than saying where the president is visiting.

The IMMEDIATE reaction was FEAR ... PANIC. That reaction was followed quickly with ANGER.

Cheney/Bush did their work well. We're programmed.
